I see the conversation in here is thoughtful and stimulating.

I was originally going to read and learn about St. Patrick's Day in depth and offer the same opportunity to folks here, but it would be quite a long read so for those who would like to learn the culture behind something that has become iconic world-wide:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick%27s_Day

Overall I have to say it is good to see that the festival has moved away from its religious roots and on to promoting the rich culture that exists to this day. It seems it has always been more of a cultural celebration in the USA, having been celebrated here since the late 18th century.

How about you folks, how do you plan to enjoy it if you do?

Even though my RL name is Patrick, my mum only calls me Patrick when she's upset with me, I'm pretty much just Greg these days. Even so, the St. Patrick's Day jokes at me are endless, cliche and I hate them.

Personally I really enjoy Irish culture. They have some of the most beautiful art, music, and speech.

Gaeilge is probably, in my opinion, the prettiest language ever.

"Gaelic" can actually refer to any of three languages: Irish-Gaelic (Gaeilge), Manx Language (Gaelg or Gailck), or Scottish-Gaelic (Gàidhlig or Erse)

I personally have a much stronger attachment to Scottish-Gaelic.

That's why I specifically said "Gaeilge" instead of "Gaelic" ;o

I think the Irish form is the most beautiful.

My grandmother's parents were a couple, one from North, one from South. They fleed to New York to escape the scrutiny and threats on their life. They got on the wrong boat at the last minute and accidentally ended up here, in New Zealand.
