One could argue that Weasyl is a diaspora of users.

Honestly, how many came here just because one other website reached a period of questionable instability? And how many have returned to these websites after the ruckus has settled down?

The difference is I think there's still a chance Weasyl could become something else. Again, this tends to remain pretty stable, pretty solid, and the culture doesn't intentionally drive away all but the fringe. It's not to say nothing can or will go wrong, it just hasn't yet. I spent maybe an hour or so on Phoenix before it was pretty obvious what the forum was, and again, there's something here besides the forums. The actual site seems to be more active than the forums which to me is encouraging because it means people care more about art than politics and their e-peen.

Weasyl being composed of predominately refugees from other sites could be a good thing or it could go terribly wrong. We can get people who knows what was wrong on the site they came from and came here expecting higher standards, or we can get people who just track negativity in or people that just stay here until their site of origin calms down. I've seen plenty of refugees on the forums who were active for a few days to a week and then never saw them post again, which gets really annoying really fast. Sadly, people who come from another site and stay are rare.

And what do you think happens most places on the internet, the owners of the site just shit users out of their doughey white asses or something? Everything comes from something else, everyone comes from somewhere else. It's like saying a country can't work because of immigrants. Because it's easier than admitting you just don't know what to do with them besides complain before they even have a chance to prove you wrong. Besides if you're right all that means is Phoenix is fucked too because that's not even immigrants, that's gypsies. Or in their case more like pikies.

I'm aware that a userbase comes from somewhere; I'm pointing out that a pretty good portion of people that came here from FA/dA ended up going back after some time like a person going back to an abusive partner, and that the people that stay could be a positive or a negative influence. I never said either situation is restricted to Weasyl; Furiffic is probably having some problems with the former considering how new the site is.

Before anyone jumps down my throat for the analogy above, I do feel that comparing those two sites to abusive spouses has ground. Dragoneer is full of empty promises and he has even outright abused the userbase (as a whole or individuals from it) on many occasions, and dA staff collectively fails (and RealitySquared outright refuses) to protect their users and their intellectual property.

Oh, trust me, you will get absolutely no argument from me that there is most definitely a lot of abuse that comes directly from top dung. But that's precisely why I respond with the bottom up approach because, while I or we or they or whoever cannot really change that many people's minds, I can certainly use my own and all I find as time goes on is people do eventually reach a tipping point and, if they don't revolutionize things, they move on to somewhere else or just give up on the thing completely.

For the brief time I was on Phoenix, all I saw was two things: it was mostly the same people with even less motive to pretend to be anything other than the sum of their addled, broken parts now that there isn't as much pressure to conform to anyone or anything external to the pre-existing groupthink of the old forum. But the other, more telling thing was this. I was only the 421st member to join the forum in, um, how long as it been around at this point? It did gain a few members in that short window, yes, but that's still paltry compared to its old userbase. What happened to all that hype that the fallout of FAF had generated and, you'd think, should have given the new forums the momentum any new project needs? Do you seriously think seeing someone as relatively innocuous as me get banned with not even anything but the weakest lip service to a warning really instills that much confidence in anyone who just saw that, at least anyone with any of the kinds of controversial opinions and unorthodox writing styles that kind of medium should not just welcome, but embrace if it wants hype and the activity it generates? A massive echo chamber of about 500 people or less in several months is not a great amount of progress, you know?

I only lay into them in particular as heavy as I do because there, that was supposed to be our example of how FAF could be different this time. And I still believe, if nothing else, it was an effort on some people's part. FA proper really just wants to rest on its laurels and that damns giant megacorps to eventual obscurity and irrelevance. FA is an online club. It's not even a social network in the mainstream sense of the word. And I get that it totally wants to be "maverick", or something, but everyone eventually bows to the mainstream, out of sheer necessity if nothing else. One day, the shit will have to evolve or go offline as the very architecture of the internet as a whole outstrips its ability to even exist on it. It's simply a matter of time. Time, it seems, dwindles rapidly for things these days. That's why I'm not that confident, even beyond all the social problems at play because all the "friends" in the world clapping their hands and believing doesn't change certain cold, hard realities about the world they live in.

If I've been doing one stupid thing for my part it's putting all my eggs in one basket only to dump them in another. We, almost all of us at least, seem to be guilty of this to some extent. Like, I find it very easy to justify investing time and effort into posting here and on the rest of Weasyl (I just like the fact I can consider them two parts of a whole instead of two fundamentally different beasts like with FA/FAF) for some very good reasons. The fact I can talk about my own possible, future death/suicide and be treated like a still normal person for it instead of like a criminal and a pariah like on FA. The fact I can talk about anything period without everyone assuming the worst just because they pretty much are the worst themselves. It's a critically different vibe, and the vibe is what a community thrives or implodes on. It runs pretty consistently, stays stable, has a few bugs here and there that at least people in charge acknowledge and don't make constant excuses for, and for those reasons the minute there's things to draw people here, they come. I believe they will begin to stay as FA continues to degrade further, and others will fuck off to places like Pheonix and the no-frills fuckbuddy sites where they probably ought to have started in the first place.

I have begun hunting around for other spots though and I remember F2F had its own issue with a deadbeat sketchbag running the place. What killed that is he literally just vanished one day and didn't even try to tell anyone what was going on. Someone did try to revive it and I know the Facebook group I joined for it still gets some activity so I'll have to see how that went. But I see other forums and sites sitting there with there late 90's graphics and like 30 registered users since 2009 or whenever they began and, yeah, do not want. Sadly, find a fuck buddy and start a cult bizarre living arrangement with your furry "friends" seems to be the main motive for most so the truth may be those shallow, pornoriffic sites might be the entire endgame of the majority of the fandom.

Goodbye, let's start some new shit in their absence, that's all I'm about.

To make it a bit more clear: Wolf-Bone registered on the Phoenix forums. Wolf-Bone proceeded to pick a fight with everyone with every post he made. Wolf-Bone was banned from the forum within 24hrs. Wolf-Bone now wants to talk about how much Phoenix 'sucks'.
