I know what the About page says; and what some staff have said about their intentions for Weasyl, in the thread Metsys linked and elsewhere. For the reasons they and I touched on, I maintain that in practice this works better as a mission statement for a piece of software than as one for a specific online community. DeviantArt's history is worth reviewing - it became a leader in skinning, then diversified as it grew.

To get back to the original topic… one way in which non-furry artists might be encouraged to participate would be to provide communities for groups interested in particular artistic themes. This would not avoid the global furry theme (except for a human-specific group) but it might provide one more reason to non-furs to stick around. Basically, create lots of little sub-groups within the whole, with promotion on the front page.

I agree with you in principal, it makes good sense, but none of my friends will touch this site and I understand why. I've no time to start a drive to call for other artists to join and form sub-communities. Nor do I see this happening without some assistance from the Weasyl staff.

I want to say something specifically to you; You are well spoken, articulate your beliefs well and do so without the use of anger or profanities. I have great respect for that as these things are slowly becoming a lost art online. I hope you keep that code of honor with you always.

For myself I will say farewell. I'm not a good fit and doubt I ever will be. I do so without bad feelings towards yourself, the staff or the community at large.

    Peace and all the best,

    Cynn

Man, if Weasyl cloned its repo to make a sister site free of furry that would be glorious. Too bad the code isn't open.

Honestly, I'd say just do what you like to do, regardless of the general audience that seems to have popped up on the site.

I hear you on feeling like the odd man out, definitely, as a non-furry artist as well. But I much prefer the clean, streamlined layout of this site to the clunky, overly busy layout of Deviant Art. I get more comments/likes on DA, and most of the artists I follow are on there, but this site is prettier. I really hate the porn aspect though, and it really does feel like a furry club. But that's fine with me. There are several non-furry artists here that put out excellent work.

Whoever it was that said it would be nice if they took this site's code and used it to make a different community that was porn-free and more diverse--I like that idea quite a lot.

I apologize if this comes across as a cheeky comment from a staff member (because that's not the intention), but I wanted to remind folks that you can filter the content you see on the site by rating and through tags, so if you don't enjoy seeing pornographic material, you can keep it set to Mature (18+) and below. We do try hard to keep things rated properly throughout the site, so filtering in this way ought to be fairly effective.

In any case, I may point other staff members to this thread if they haven't given it a look yet.

I definitely appreciate this feature, and I do use the filter. I wouldn't be here if the filter didn't exist. I have little kids running around, I can't have them seeing that. Still, some people improperly rate their drawings. Scantily clad females in suggestive poses break through the filter all the time because people will rate them too low. I rarely visit the browsing section because of this. (This is obviously a user problem, I know there's only so much the staff can do.)
