SITE BUG - Avatar Image (Animated GIF with Transparency)

    Hello Weasyl staff:

I may have discovered a bug with the way Weasyl's main site handles animated GIF files with transparency (ONLY when used in the avatar field - the same image uploaded into the gallery works fine).

So here's the issue: When the avatar image field displays an animated GIF with transparency, sometimes it would get stuck and leave behind "ghost" images.

For example, look at my avatar image here:

Notice that right after the panther mounts the centaur, the image starts ghosting?

The same image, uploaded to the gallery, works perfectly fine:

I can of course work around this issue by disabling the GIF's transparency (giving it a black background or something), but I think the transparency looks really awesome with some animated GIF's...

If someone can take a look at this issue, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm still investigating the issue, but it looks like if you resize the gif to be 99x99 instead of 100x100, it won't get mangled (as badly).

you can try it yourself with this edited version i've made here, lemme know if it works for you. http://i.imgur.com/VzN46eb.gif
you can use that as a holdover I guess until the actual issue is fixed.

Just tried it, and yes it looks like a temporary workaround. It seems the reason this works is because by making the avatar image less than 100 pixel in height or width, the resize routine kicks in - and whatever that routine does, it prevents the ghosting from occuring (at the expense of making the image blurry, though)

    Thanks for looking into this.

Hello, I am just wondering if this issue was ever resolved? Thanks!
