There is a valid point though that biology is complicated enough to defy neat classification. There are patterns reliable enough for us to label, but there are almost always exceptions that don't fall within any of the neat little boxes we try to fit them in.

There is no single characteristic that is truly binary and can be used to neatly declare "male" or "female" in all cases. Chromosomal anomalies exist. Anatomical anomalies exist. Genetic anomalies exist. Psychological anomalies exist.

Those who insist on sex and gender being identical, binary, and immutable are trying to force an oversimplification onto reality, and reality won't cooperate.

    1. a deviation from the common rule, type, arrangement, or form.
    Synonyms: abnormality, exception, peculiarity.
    2. an anomalous person or thing; one that is abnormal or does not fit in:
With his quiet nature, he was an anomaly in his exuberant family.
    3. an odd, peculiar, or strange condition, situation, quality, etc.
    4. an incongruity or inconsistency.
It's amazing we make any scientific or social progress with such a seemingly debilitating allowance to this condition.

This is why science is hard. Each successive level of science education is mainly learning about all the special cases and exceptions to the things you learned previously. Problem is, those that only ever receive an introductory science education can come away thinking they understand a lot more than they really do.

"To tell us that every species of thing is endowed with an occult specific quality by which it acts and produces manifest effects, is to tell us nothing; but to derive two or three general principles of motion from phenomena, and afterwards to tell us how the properties and actions of all corporeal things follow from those manifest principles, would be a very great step." -Issac Newton, Optics
