Views on erotic/adult and clean/general stories

I've been reading through some posts on the forums and I'm a little bit tickled in one aspect. There seems to be a running theme of "erotica is bad", though that could just be the raised voices, the more noticeable people posting.

So, what do you guys think? Do you think there's anything wrong with erotica?

I've had great success with my clean stories (except two, for some reason, perhaps slightly too long for my target audience at 6,000 words approx each), reaching several thousand views on most on my main sites. I have only recently expanded to complete my Weasyl gallery and keep it updated. Erotic receives more views as a general rule but there are exceptions to the rule. I find that different stories do better on different sites. Hard kinks (often things that may be perceived as 'dirty') do best on FA, so far, while SoFurry appears to like power play. I haven't found a trend for Weasyl or Inkbunny yet.

It really depends on advertising how much a story is read and how you utilise the tools at your disposal, in my opinion - not whether something is erotic or clean. I love adventure stories (usually within fantasy realms) but also tackling serious topics, such as mental health and family issues. I target the content towards different audiences but the beauty of clean stories in the furry realm is that ANYONE who is a furry can be a reader. You're not limited to a specific kink (which may make them squeamish or turn them off) but the whole world of furries and something that, hopefully, they can enjoy, become engrossed in and relate to.

Thoughts on clean and erotic writing then!

I do not like to read erotica. I do not want to write erotica. That is not an interest of mine, and I want to be known for other stories, especially ones I can talk about with my religious, conservative family and not be written out of the will about.

But then there is another distinction to be made. Despite what I said above, it is possible, if extremely unlikely, to get me to read a story with an erotic scene if it is crucial to the story, although more than likely I'll skip that part and hope it's explained elsewhere later. If there is nothing to the story except a sex scene, I won't bother. Do note though I'm the same way about violence or profanity. From my perspective, none of these things should appear in a story just because. There must be a reason for their presence.

All this, and I have not answered the question you posed. All I've said is that I don't like it. :p And yet, that is where I will stop for now.

I like erotica and adult themes of that nature if it has a purpose. I don't like sex for the sake of it. To me, that just shows poor writing skills. I usually look down on erotica because it is both badly written and there is no purpose for it (especially in the furry fandom). Some of my stories include such things but I don't post them because 1) I've procrastinated horribly (shh don't judge, full time job and school, c'mon) and 2) I'm really hesitant on the reaction because it also has extremely sensitive topics and I enjoy not getting hate mail even if it means people have read it. Also 3) I'm incredibly insecure in my writing ability so even if I DO manage to write it out, I'd probably keep it to myself.

It's kinda like fanfiction. There's some really good ones out there...but it's rare so the general reaction is "ugh".

Tl;dr there's nothing inherently wrong with it, it's just people tend to not do it well.

I have nothing against erotica or porn itself. I do get disappointed when they crowd out clean works and people feel like they can't avoid it if they choose, though.

Why do you say that erotica is written badly? And how would something sexual serve no purpose?

I think the stigma against erotica in some circles comes more from the fact that the bulk of it on places like FA or SoFurry, or Weasyl to an extent, is less 'erotica' and more 'porn'. It seems to me that there's a tendency for writers of porn or fetish material or what have you to disregard the quality of their works in favor of just pounding on the titillating aspects, sometimes to an absurd degree (having had to read numerous such works as part of admin duties, I an attest to this firsthand on Weasyl). I guess the thought is that it's not the quality the readers care about; the only thing such writing (technically) needs to accomplish is arousal. So you end up with writers who are extremely prolific because they feel no need for storytelling, editing, or revision (or even creative language; the same vocabulary is used over and over again in every story), and then authors like that naturally flood the market and overpower the more careful writers.

In the end, then, it's really the bad writing that gets people annoyed, but the focus gets put on erotica because that's the easiest kind of bad writing to get away with. It's this whole idea of "I spent four months writing this beautifully-crafted short story that has something very deep and inspiring to say about humanity and the world, and it's getting crowded out by 50,000 thrown-together scraps about some personality-less character going around pissing on people." When you frame it that way, it gets folks all riled up, I think.

Speaking in general, here, of course. Obviously there's folks like Levi up there who simply have no taste for erotica, for whatever reason.

As for badly written, Renard sums it up pretty accurate. For your second question, by not having any character development, attachment or any plot related anything to it. If you cut out that scene and literally nothing changes in the story it serves no purpose. It'd honestly be as relevant as the person sleeping.

That's not to say it couldn't be written well, just that it often isn't.

I guess I parsed it differently, i.e. it is badly written, which you usually look down on. Sorry.
