    YouTube automatic profile link problem

The automatically generated profile link doesn't work for YouTube. Actually, the whole YouTube user linking is a big mess.

After setting up Google+ I was told I can create a unique link with a unique name. The format is:

    http://plus.google.com/+UNIQUENAME
    https://www.youtube.com/c/UNIQUE_NAME

    In my case:
    https://plus.google.com/+StormEngineer
    https://www.youtube.com/c/StormEngineer

Supplying StormEngineer as Google+ user works as intended. For YouTube, however, the following link is generated:
    https://www.youtube.com/user/StormEngineer

    THAT IS SOMEONE ELSE!
    It's NOT me!

    The correct formats are:
    /c/UNIQUE_NAME
    /channel/CHANNEL_ID
    /user/USER_ID

Interestingly, QUSTOM_NAME, CHANNEL_ID and USR_ID are three different things that are not interchangeable in any combination, only the three strict combinations above seem to work.

    Thanks for reporting this.

I think the issue here is how YouTube represents Google+ linked usernames differently than YouTube-specific usernames. I'm not sure there's a good way to support one class without breaking the links for the other. Until there's a good solution, you may have to use custom profile links to link to Google+ associated YouTube users.

The whole thing is a mess now on Google's side.

Probably what you could do is have the user enter a full URL, and then recognize the pattern (/channel/, /user/ or /c/ ) and then process it accordingly into a nice link. At least that's what I would do.

...How is that functionally different than the current custom profile link support, though?

If anything I would completely do away with the "XYZ site profile" fields, and make it a "I am ___ on ___ [link: ___]" form to add arbitrary sites. Bonus: if a new site comes along and gets popular, no having to update databases or page layouts to add it!
