    Dealing with fans..?

So in all my writing years I've had supporters, followers, haters, and regular posters, but I've never had fans before. Then I started writing a WoW fanfic about a paladin named Jack Radical going around porking elfs and all of the sudden I actually have like, legit fans, people PMing me telling me how much they like my style and characters, how they can't wait to see more, etc. Well one has taken it to an entirely new level. I have 7 messages sitting in my inbox from this person and frankly idk how to respond. They've commented on every single story and want me to use one of their characters in a fanfic at some point, which I thought well that's cool I like getting feedback and doing crossover stuff. Then I come back and find they're written an entire story about Jack. A fanfiction about a fanfiction, it's like fanfictionception or something.

This is getting weird. I didn't post this in the writing section because I'd imagine this is something artists have to deal with more often, but perhaps this is just par for the course and I'm not used to it. Either way, people writing about my characters is really… odd. What do?

Fans and borderline stalkers are two different things.

I'd say ask politely for it to stop, and become more insistent if that fails. Barring that, you may have to cut your losses and slip away into the tubes. You stepped into dark waters when you ventured into the depths of fanfiction.

Judging by the solicitations I see on nearly every successful artist's page and submissions I'd assume this was normal or even expected. I kind of cringe when I think about what their PM box must look like.

I'm not that popular, but I have had people who do like / comment every little thing that I make, and have drawn fanart and used my headcanons and shit for the koopas for their own interpretations.

I wouldn't be bothered by fanfiction, I guess, unless they were trying to claim the character for themselves or asserting that their fic actually applies to the canon of your character.
But if you are bothered by it, you should probably just tell them to chill out a bit.
I mean, that's ultimately up to your discretion and your own personal boundaries. And if they can't respect that, well that's what the block button's for.

Nope, I thought you were a brony...

Edit: All shitting aside, Journals are probably the best way to deal with large audiences or fans.

Rule 1 should really be don't be a major douchebag.
    Because..The fans make you.
    Sorry to say.
But in a twisted sort of way..The fans kinda own you.

I haven't gotten the Twilight message, but at this point Jack Radical has more RL women on his dick than I do. I don't even know what's happening anymore.

Rule 1 applies to every one, including fans. Act like a douche bag and you'll be treated like one.

Fans certainly contribute & influence, but they DON'T "make" a person who they are.
It's disgusting to watch, people putting others on a pedestal and worshipping them.
Only to no longer treat that person like a human being...

Sorry but "fans" don't "own" anyone. Nobody "owns" any one. (That's just fucking sick.)

If you have a large following of people that feels entitled to you, all your time or your entire personal life.
    I would suggest...

1.) Telling them to back the fuck off, and be polite or considerate.
2.) Cut them off or find new fans.
3.) Take your pursuits or business elsewhere.
    OR
4.) Move on with your life.

    ...FAN-Art & Porn = Murky waters...

Edit: Just to clarify my position further,
You have a responsibility to your patrons and owed commissions.
You have a responsibility to those that admire/look up to you, or your work.
However you're still a human being with personal boundaries, limited time, and so fourth.
People need to understand and respect that.
