Adding images to journals?

Hi everyone!

I've been trying to add images to a journal post - but there isn't any specific method listed in the Markdown Help page, or the FAQ, and yet I've seen it said that Journals DO, in fact, support image insertion....
HTML doesn't seem to work, either - instead of an image, it turns up as a link in the journal.

Or is this just not an implemented feature???

Image embedding is disabled currently iirc.

The Markdown syntax is the same as links, but with a leading exclamation mark:

![An image](http://example.com/image.png)

As Fiz said, image embedding is disabled while we decide how it ought to work (if at all). (For example: allowing external embedding is a potential privacy problem; should we proxy these? Disable them?)

I recommend not allowing hotlinking to external images, for two reasons: One, people often try to hotlink from sites that don't allow it; the image still shows up for them, that one time, so they think it worked, but everyone else sees a broken image, a placeholder, or worse. The other is that even if the site does allow hotlinking, the image may eventually be taken down, leaving the journal with missing content. Given that the vast majority of Weasyl's storage and bandwidth already go towards hosting images, automatically rehosting embedded images probably wouldn't even cause a noticeable spike; it'd just be a matter of putting together the interface for it.

Automatically rehosting images poses another risk, though. When it comes to copyrighted content, there's likely less risk to someone linking to outside content than there is with rehosting that content. Caching and rehosting that content, however, would mean potentially infringing content was hosted on weasyl's servers.
