I tried to connect to the IRC server with Konversation today - but the TLS certificate has expired. The expiry date is Mon Jun 19 03:26:00 2017 GMT.

Likely not. But there is always mibbit for web clients:

You just need to put in the server rather than use the dropdown.

WikiFur has set up a channel on Freenode - and Freenode uses qwebirc, a web IRC client with a high-performance Python server. You can pre-fill nickname using the query URL too!

IRC feels too archaic now. I know many have moved on to Discord.
