Copyright Infringment: Why does it happen?

An article by an artist who has been keeping track of how many times his designs and drawings have been swiped and used without his permission on other products

"Since 2008 I've had more than 300 copyright infringements of my work. Some are easily resolved by requesting the removal of it from a website from the infringing websites, and others I've had to get a copyright lawyer involved and that has cost me a lot of money and time, but in each case we've won the fight and resolved the matter.

So I'm going to share a few infringements I've dealt with."

Lesson of the day: People really love tribals that much.

Pretty great read (and some parts are cringeworthy) but, really, the interior designer part got me laughing for a solid 10 minutes. How does an interior designer think that looks good for a living?? lol.

    Really unlucky guy gotta say.

Jesus, people just do NOT give a single fuck, do they?

Reminds me of the time when some band on Myspace stole one of my personal photo edits, way back in the day, for their album art.
Although my issue pales in comparison, obviously.

Ignoring innocent mistakes (and yes, they do sometimes happen) there is the common factor of a "I won't get caught" sentiment/attitude/belief on the part of the infringer.

This reminds me of a certain incident that happened this past week. A guy was taking images of the really pretty looking ball-jointed dolls, popular ones at that, applied photoshop filters on them and said they were his paintings. He then made a kickstarter for an 'art book' of the characters with these images, and managed to get a little over a grand. However, because the date hadn't passed, the proper owners of the photographs came out and reported it. Since then his kickstarter has been removed, and he's deactivated his DA account.

It really sucks when this happens

Yikes, ive seen the tribal bat one everywhere. I guess if people see a design and like it, they are gunna take and use it permission or not.

There are some things that people just don't think about as being copyrighted. I think tattoos are one of the biggest offenders in this case because a lot of people just Google search what they want, print it out, and then show it to the artist. And because they're not really selling or doing anything with it aside from putting it on their body, they think it's fine.

That's really what it is, people don't think. We live in a world where we're surrounded by high quality images that are available for nothing, or next to nothing, so we don't always appreciate that someone put a lot of effort. The anonymity also leads people to think that it's a victimless crime, or that nobody will know. It's the same sort of rationalization that makes some people see shoplifting from some place like Walmart to be a lesser crime than knocking over the local mom and pop store. The problem we're seeing now is that people who grew up thinking that using other people's images without asking is all right are now starting their own businesses, and the habits are still there.
Of course, try using their work without asking, and watch them raise all sorts of holy hell.

Here's my 2 cents- modern copyright laws are already corrupt and far beyond their original intentions of granting commercial rights to creative works, and what's considered "infringement" is so broad and overreaching that a majority of everyday people are criminals because of them- when most of the people in an entire country are criminals becuase of a single set of laws, it just might be a problem with the law rather than the people. :U

...then again, I'm the kind of fellow who doesn't really care if his work is shared as long as I get credit there is no profit made by the sharer. O.o

(and no, I am NOT saying it's OK to make a profit off of someone else's work and claim it as your own)
