For the Vector section (and superb for idea generation) I'd like to add Alchemy to the mix. Freeware.

Andrew Jones giving a demo of it, while using a synthesizer with mic/type shapes option to distort shapes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYYSx...eature=related

I haven't used this in a long time and so far I didn't see any one mention it...
(Windows version can be found by scrolling down to "Version 2.6")

Definitely going to throw this back in my toolbox. http://krita.org/

Iaza is a good online image editor that can make a selected colour in an image you upload transparent if your art program doesnt have that function; it can also do animation, which is useful for putting together frames of animated icons/pixels for example!

Speedy Painter 3.0 is nice, light and basic. It also has a few neat features-

    How about some Fractal creators?

Apophysis 7x (Free) I also suggest this one for those new to Fractals.
Chaotica (Costs $$, has a free version, use along side Apophysis 7x)
    JWildFire (Free)
Ultra Fractal (costs $$ after 30 day trial)
    Mandelbulber 3D Fractal Explorer (Free)

    Edit:

Incendia - 3D Fractal Engine (Free, donors get a larger resolution and 3D Snowflake generator)

Here's a complete list of the Fractal creators and what each is capable of, along with additional info.

If you have an iPad, Procreate is by far the best digital art suite you can get.

The only problem is that there are certain features you cannot use with older iPads. I was pretty upset about it because I have a JaJa Stylus and couldn't get the latest updates from it anymore.
