It will always be frustrating for people who are really deep fans of something in particular to see that thing they treasure so greatly whored out and debased for cheap money delivered by meager pandering. It doesn't matter how many years something has been a thing, the most recent presentation that breaks the pop-culture barrier will be the only thing that sticks out in an unfortunate number of people's minds.

Vampires have been a thing for a very, very long time and yet the whole thing is still reeling from the damage Twilight did.

Sherlock Holmes is something that has always been of a more intellectual bent, even if the recent movies (Which were very good movies) were a little more action and a little less mystery.
