Tutorial for what constitutes "Moderate", "Mature" and "Explicit"

I notice some uploads that are very definitely porn end up being set as "Mature". I think it might not be a bad idea to have a walkthrough for uploading and maturity settings, giving examples of what constitutes what so that people learn how to better flag their uploads. This will also ensure that filter settings work better.

The definition is really pretty simple and is explained very clearly here. If you see anything you think is incorrectly rated, report it and a moderator will look into it and handle the situation.

To be completely honest, this has already been discussed in another thread and it was quite clear that the definitions are everything but simple, clear or straight forward. They are broad, littered with "this, except when that" and many terms that are subject to interpretation or subjective in nature.

What parts in particular do you find confusing?

Just report it. They are working on the rating system. I had similar issues two week ago.

    Well, for starters...

    Under general
"However, no appearances of genitalia, implied or otherwise." Does this, or does this not include female breasts without nipples on furries and cartoon characters? What does non-detailed mean? Partial nudity should be under moderate, but non-detailed nudity is allowed under general?
"Light displays of platonic affection are accepted (e.g. hugs)." This would lead me to believing that a passionate kiss in an image depicting a candlelight dinner would be unfit for general. Say, the kind shown in Disney's Lady & the Tramp. Platonic affection is a big word.
"May contain mild cartoon/stylized depictions of blood, injury, or violence." This sounds like a rather empty statement. What is a stylized depiction of blood/injury? Aren't all artistic depictions innately stylized?
    In general, what is cartoon?

    Moderate
"May contain mild use of strong expletives or profanity." What is the difference between light and mild?
"Content must be suitable for audiences age 13+." This is a heavily culturally loaded statement. What my grandmother thinks is suitable for an audience of 13+ is a lot different from what my brother thinks.
"May contain partial nudity (e.g. Breast cleavage and exposed buttocks)." Don't all furries have exposed buttocks unless they're specifically clothed? How much cleavage is considered cleavage for the purposes of this definition?
"May contain mild violence or fantasy violence. Violence depicted must not be gory, pervasive, or sexual in nature." How is this different from the violence allowed under general?
"May contain mild implications of sexual activity or themes. This includes implied sexual acts, references, behavior, or the presence of mild sexual situations or discussion. May not feature fetish material or sex paraphernalia such as sex toys or gear." What is considered a sex toy or gear? Sexy underwear? Straps on a goth character? Implied usage of a hotdog or carrot for penetration? Non-sexual bondage in an image implying sexual contexts?
"May include incidental or comedic use of drugs such as marijuana, sativa, hallucinogens or prescription drugs." What is incidental use? I have no idea what the purpose of this sentence is apart from comedical drug-culture satire.

    Mature
All of these are in the context of non-explicit non-sexual nature, which in itself is already a heavily subjective premise.
"Sexual Situations - Equivalent to Moderate." Does this mean that artistic posing, when done in conjunction with sexualized paraphernalia, such as a dance pole, should be under explicit? How about sexually oriented clothing, which could be considered paraphernalia, such as crotchless underwear, in an artistic context? Non-sexual depictions of sex toys?
"May contain intense violence. May also include imagery or situations that may be considered disturbing or repulsive to the average viewer such as serious injury, disembowelment, dismemberment, and excessive blood." How much is excessive blood? Nosebleed? A bloody sword? A pool of blood under a dead character? What about non-explicit sexual violence referred to in Moderate, or is that Explicit? Spanking? Piercing? Genital piercing? Emasculation? Vore? Vore without a raging boner in the view?

    Explicit
"NOTE: Any depictions of bodily waste must be rated as Explicit." Does this include farting or vomiting?

I realize that the guideline says that all decisions are subject to a moderator's discretion, but a lot of cases are left to educated guesses on the user's end, which is not good for consistency.

I think the rules at least around "mild" nudity are trying to have exceptions based on context. But I do feel that the rules could be simplified, and some of the rules don't really match up with what they are wanting. Just to add onto Xargs talk some.

I'm just going to give my thoughts and suggestions on making General easier to understand. If I get positive feedback than I'll do moderate, if not I won't.

Language May contain light usage of mild expletives or profanity.

What words does this website consider to be mild?

    Nudity Contains no nudity.

This one should be really simple. And would be fine if left at "contains no nudity" The extra contextual stuff added to allow for swimsuits and undergarments would probably work better if moved down to moderate as exceptions.

Sexual Situations Contains no sexual situations.

This one again is largely fine I'd find a way to add that images specifically designed to be titillating are disallowed. (Also I feel that small kisses ex pecks on the lips/cheeks should be ok alongside hugs)

Violence May contain mild cartoon/stylized depictions of blood, injury, or violence.

At least where video games are concerned, both America (US+Canada) and Europe normally bump anything containing blood up to a moderate rating. So this one might need to be looked at again

Drug Use Contains no drug use. Must be free of any drug use or references.

This one is nice clear and concise.
Fish heads! Fish heads! Rolly polly fish heads! Fish heads! Fish heads! Eat them up! Yum!

    Hope this isn't too old of a thread for me to revive. ^^;
I had similar concerns as tycho and xarg, and was wondering if any decisions or updates had been made or are still in discussion.
I just joined weasyl, and the content rating system was a big draw for me. If done well I think it would really make weasyl stand out, especially for those who love to share their art and view others' work, but don't want to see things they find offensive.
In particular, I think a lot of users think only in terms of "mature" and "not mature," which is why there are actually quite a lot of images posted in the general category that show cleavage (or bare breasts altogether, though without nipples), buttocks, and provocative poses. I don't think said users are intentionally mis-categorizing their art, but if it's something that's important to this site (and I think it is) then it ought to be very clear what the guidelines are and a high priority should be given to addressing reported submissions.
Addressing the issues pointed out by xarg I think would be an excellent step in this direction.
