i don't have a really strong preference, I use pen a lot just from not having pencils around historically, and usually for fast doodles and stuff I prefer it. I like pencil more for trying to do slower practice, trying to construct things better, and obviously for things I think I'll want to ink up.

actually my friend dekks just got a really sick mechanical pencil from an art store, I can't remember the brand but it felt much more like a pen than any mech pencils I've tried so I'd like to get one of those!
