I'd also like to suggest a more drastic change. On the competitor art websites, your submission inbox the title of the piece and the name of the user who submitted it. On Weasyl, the title and artist only appear on mouse over. While it does look sleek and snazzy, it pushes aside the social aspect. I don't view works just because I like the thumbnail, I open them because they're done by my friends and favorite artists. On Weasyl I either have to guess who drew something or else hover my mouse over.

(This is one of my recommendations for improving Weasyl as a social networking site.)

It'd probably be an administrative nightmare to do, but my only recommendation is to enforce proper tagging on mature works by making it a violation of the AUP/TOS to submit mature works without tags.
I don't understand the logic here...
Content control is already the staff's job, hiding the problems under a carpet (in this case, poor thumbnails) doesn't exactly solve that issue.

Just like any other art site, be it Furaffinity, SoFurry, InkBunny, DeviantArt, etc...
I can choose not to click on a tiny thumbnail that I am able to tell will not be towards my tastes.

Currently every picture of a face can lead to something unpleasant, and that is an issue unique to Weasyl's design.

I'm not arguing with that, but I would say that if I can see it in the thumbnail, I'll still know what I'm looking at. I'm saying that the issue runs a little deeper than just the thumbnails, and a properly enforced tagging system for mature content is pretty much the only way to get the blacklist to work correctly.

    hmmm...
I believe every furry site has a small amount of issues with tags.
Some try to remedy that by requiring a few of them when someone marks their submission as mature.

SoFurry for example forces you to mark the gender if the picture is mature.
    male, female, herm, m/f, m/m...etc.
It helps a bit and you are able to filter out what you don't want to see.

    However...
It is very hard and time consuming to find every single tag for every single fetish that disgusts you and filter them out.
Even if the system was tag system was working perfectly, sooner rather than later another face-thumbnail will send you somewhere terrifying.~

This could maybe be alleviated by having an additional maturity rating above adult, exclusively for work with strong fetishes that might trigger a reaction of disgust in most, though that's more of a bandage solution. You can only go so far with the ratings...

This is a good idea. I think SoFurry has the 'Extreme' maturity tag for well... extreme stuff.

Aww, now I'll need a fake ID to rent ultra-porn.
