One more thing on the platypus: the word originally comes from Greek, not Latin, so it was originally πλατυπους (platypous). because of this, the "original" pluralization would not have been "platypi," but instead "platypodes."

OT: Children in northeast Africa make bracelets and necklaces from beads, but use strips of popped tires instead of string. This is because tires are a common waste in the bush, as there are few paved roads.
