Let's go with the short explanation.

My involvement with the fandom evolved from there.

I've always been fascinated with bats, and I loved disney movies and such growing up as a kid. The thought of a bat anthropomorphic version of myself is quite entertaining.

Mainly I enjoy the fandom for art and for fursuiting - it's entertaining and fun to bring a smile to people's faces. :3

Dunno if I truly consider myself in the fandom or any fandom :I
I just call myself a furry because I have an anthro character based around me (aka a fursona) and usually when you tell people that they call you a furry

Honestly, my original intention for joining was because drawing people became boring and I felt I wasn't very good at it. So I tried something else.
Oh, and DA at the time had taken a nose dive and wasn't an enjoyable community experience.

I got in the NSFW way.

It probably was somewhere in 1998/early 1999. Pokemon started to air here in my country which was the catalyst for the events to follow. Back then newsgroups were still the hotness and I went over it with good old Outlook Express in search of stuff (read, mostly porn). I stumbled upon this one called Alt.Games.Nintendo.Pokemon.Hentai and I just stuck around. First lurking, followed by some replies. And then drawing for it. It was a small community and at the time Pokemon wasn't in any way associated with Furry yet. Looking for more like what this newsgroup had I came across the Furry related ones. Both sources made sure I'm the messed up person I am today.

I was looking for an artist to get a piece of work done that I needed, I knew it had to be an anthro artist and at the time I wasn't fond of DA so I spent a lot of time looking for someone who could do it. I ended up finding someone on FAF that could do it for me and it turned out amazing.
It was during my time working with the artist and returning to FAF to talk to him that I really got into the fandom, plus the people I met were so nice it was hard to just up and leave once the commission was done. So, here I am.

I had a very weird time getting into the community. I kinda bounced around a bunch of other tangentially related groups.
In the meantime, I'd say the root of it all is probably in my obsession with fantasy/sci-fi, a genre which furry is especially suited for.
