I think if animated gifs were allowed for banners we would have a lot of people going way overboard making flashy rainbow obnoxious images. (any chance for animation and at least a handful of people will create something seizure inducing because they can :/ )

As much as i think the banner you posted is totally awesome and would be something i would agree to let someone have as their banner, not all people will be responsible with animated banners and i can see peoples pages getting really obnoxious with them >.<

*really not wanting customization to get so much that profiles start looking like myspace*

I think Premium Members are only allowed animated GIFs as avatars on the mainsite (possiby here too), maybe that's the same for banners?
    I'm gonna test this.

Nope, no animation (I used your banner to test). :x

@Termin; It won't be MySpace like in the least seeing as how MySpace allows layout overlay with HTML. Allowing people to make their profiles stand out from others won't make it into a popularity contest social network. It'd actually make using Weasyl as a Portfolio site feasible for those who don't know how to use Tumblr, WordPress, or Build/Code websites. And it'd be a lot cheaper than hiring someone or purchasing a theme, it'd also allow for them to incorporate their work into their page and better represent them.

I never said itd be a popularity contest and never mentioned anything about HTML formatting so i'm not really sure where you are getting that from... I was just talking about the banner. The Myspace analogy was for simple fact that people dont always do responsible things.

Allowing people to animate their banners, some people will take it to far. (i've seen it happen on plenty of sites already.) Not all people will use it to a productive level as you suggest and that is what i'm worried about. I know at first chance, certain people will create "spaz" banners (colours flashing, seizure inducing, etc) and that is potentially unsafe for some users. Not to mention some people will be just simple obnoxious about their animated banners and it will be unpleasant to go to their pages. Can still images be obnoxious? Course they can! But less so then having animations out the wazoo in your face every time you try to visit a page.

That is my two cents anyways. One of the biggest things most of the students and web teachers said while going through college for web design and interactive media, is on a website, keep the animations to a minimum and only if its really simple. (thats why i like FluffKevlars banner is because its artistic, simple, and very serene.) If the banners went through an approval process, i'd be alright with that. Because then those things that would be too obnoxious or harming to some, wouldn't pass to begin with.

I agree with Temrin on this one.. Even if colours flashing and seizure inducing banners are against the rules.. there will always be that someone, who simply do not care.

@Termin; I was mentioning those as that's the only way I can see any site becoming another MySpace, something like our forum profiles is the least they can do on the mainsite as far as allowing users to customize their pages. And you've used "MySpace" as an example in many other threads, it's quite confusing really if that's the intended definition you had for it to disagree with customization.

I also know people won't listen to the rules if animated banners were allowed, I've encountered people on IMVU who didn't care for the rule even when I explained that people can get sick or have seizures when they come across their avatar or profile to which they replied "Then they shouldn't be looking at my page lol" so I know how selfish and rebellious people can be. However, if there's a minimum frame speed per second rule it might tone down on how people abuse having an animated banner, especially if the rule is placed on the banner page as well as a warning page (possibly some kind of scanner that looks at the frame speed) stating if they continue they'll be using the banner at the risk of getting contacted by a staff member and running a risk with the wellness of others. Or even your idea! Maybe animated banners have to be submitting through another field, well any gif, to be reviewed by (I assume ferrets will be left to this) Ferrets and if the user passes then F5! If not, then they'll probably have a note waiting for them.

My apologies if my analogy was confusing. (Everyone else I've ever talked too over the years has understood my point of using it so that is why i use it. This includes people all over the world not just in my area.) I have no problem clarifying if asked. Assuming kinda just takes things out of proportion.

I have no problem being able to make profiles customizable as long as it is limited. If you want a page thats fully customizable, then make a website. There are tons of places to learn how and even places that you only have to click and drag something onto the page and the website will do the coding for you, for those who dislike coding or havent had any luck learning. There are also places that have templates that you can choose from and then change colours on a simple form like when inputting information here on weasyl. Change images etc. (which wouldn't be much different then if higher customization would be available here.)

This is my personal opinion on the mater. I've yet to see someone on Nabyn abuse their editing to make spaz pages, mind you i havent been keeping up with it much lately. But it also doesnt mean that every page is nice to look at. Patterns and repeated images in the bg, etc. I think having minimal customization would be great. Possibly choosing some colours to match your banners instead of weasyl default but no backgrounds or animated things because its become way to much. imo.

I would definitely approve of things going through an approval process. I'm glad you liked that idea. I think then we could reduce the improper useage but then i also know that when weasyl gets larger, it will be very hard to keep up with all the changes. Even if it was just GIF images that needed approving, i could see it getting hard to keep up with. (some people change layouts/icons/banners every week XD ) So i really dont know. I just dont approve of animated banners without some kind of watch over it all. hmm. Its a toughy.

I was wondering about this myself. A lot of what I do and plan to do with some of my art has to do with Flash and interactivity.
I can see what everyone is concerned about when it comes to this issue, as working out quality and viewer consideration is key. I like the idea of an approval process specifically for animated banners. It is up to the staff and would add a little work, but it also could add quite a bit of robustness.

I'm not sure why Weasyl is so anti-GIF. Every creative outlet has the potential for abuse, but you shouldn't lock off legitimate pathways just because a minority might do something annoying.
    o
Just as people might upload a seizure GIF as a banner, people might also upload hardcore porn as their banner, or their avatar. It should get reported and removed, all the same. There are more legitimate uses for GIFs than there are exploititive uses.

All this talk of "approval processes" just to get a little bit of animation going on on your gallery (especially for animators, for whom animation is their main draw), is a little depressing, really. Should every banner be vetted just in case it looks ugly and eye searing? The majority won't be, but just in case!

Just allow animated GIFs for banners, and use the same level of vigilance for reporting bad ones as you do avatars.

you (all of you, really!) are reading far too much into this. the staff hasn't proclaimed anything about gifs, and the community guidelines don't say anything about it either.

this was a technical issue which has now been resolved. animated banners are just fine. there's even one on my page.
