Do you like IRC? We do. We also like you, so we've decided to combine the two and make a public IRC channel. Hooray!

What's IRC? I'm glad you asked. IRC is a thing on the internet you can use to talk to a bunch of people in a big fun group. Now you'll have the chance to interact with the Weasyl community, users and staff alike, in real time at any time. Hooray again!

How do you get on IRC? Another excellent question; you're really good at this. To get on IRC you'll need an IRC client, such as XChat (http://xchat.org/) (which is popular), Hexchat (http://hexchat.github.io/)(which is supported), or mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/) (which is also a thing) if you use Windows, Colloquy (http://colloquy.info/) if you use Mac, or Programming Your Own (https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide) if you use Linux. Alternatively, XChat and HexChat are also available for Linux, and so is Irssi (http://www.irssi.org/)but whatever. Install one of those or some other one. After you have your client sorted, you'll need to get on the server irc.weasyl.com on port 6697. Our server uses SSL so make sure you have that enabled before you log on or logging on won't actually happen. Afterwards, join the channel #weasyl, and you'll be ready for all the amazing text-based entertainment that IRC has to offer.

To summarize access:

install a client
have SSL enabled
enter this: /server irc.weasyl.com +6697
enter this: /join #weasyl
have a lot of fun with everybody

Or follow this (ircs://irc.weasyl.com:6697/weasyl).

And if you want a quick overview of the IRC services we use, check this place (http://www.stack.nl/~jilles/irc/rserv-userintro.txt) out.

What could be easier? Well, not doing it, but easier isn't always better. Better is being able to hang out with your fellow community members and talking about whatever makes you happy. The chat is moderated by Weasyl staff under forum rules and is open to everyone, so we hope to see you there, and we hope you all enjoy it!

And for those interested in helping out with coding and design for Weasyl we've set up a special channel so anyone interested can work with our development team on upcoming projects. Just follow the above instructions and enter /join #weasyl-projects. We're looking forward to seeing more of what the community has to offer.

Thanks for taking the time to check in with us, and thank you all for the positive responses to our Weasyl Spotlight post. We plan to do many more of these in the future. For more updates please follow us on Twitter at @Weasyl (https://twitter.com/weasyl) and @WeasylDev (https://twitter.com/weasyldev) or our tumblr (http://blog.weasyl.com/). You can also help take part in discussions about this post and anything else on our forums (forums.weasyl.com). We also have a public IRC channel (ircs://irc.weasyl.com:6697/weasyl) now, and you know this because you probably read everything up until this point. Go there too.

What, no love for IceChat (http://www.icechat.net/site/downloads/?category=3)?
Anyway, this sounds neat. I'll probably idle in it for a while, at least.

Alright! I'm so in. -spends the next few hrs figuring this out-

All srs'ness tho, this is a pretty neat idea. Wouldn't a chatbox (I'm assuming it's the same) be more convenient though; smack dab on either the main site or forum? I guess I shouldn't judge b4 checking this out, heh ;3.

It's much easier for us to moderate a safe chatting environment on IRC rather than a chatbox. :P Plus there are other features that you wouldn't get with a chatbox. It's pretty hopping right now, though, so hope you make it in soon!

Still getting SSL certificate errors. Causing hell on the version of X-Chat I use (http://www.silverex.org/news/).

Specifically, the below error:
* Connection failed. Error: certificate not trusted.? (27)

Any chance of this issue either being solved, or a non-SSL solution being provided?

Incidentally, thank you for not using a chatbox! Those bastards are hell, and the drama they cause are more cringeworthy than most Family Guy episodes.

Never. Ever, ever cave to those that demand one. Take this from experience, please.

We've only mentioned a couple of common clients in order to keep the announcement down to a reasonable length.

Feel free to suggest other clients in this thread though!

I would like it if there's the block feature enabled, that way there's no butting of heads, with users that don't go well together and have them blocked on the main website.

Ignoring other users is a client-side feature on IRC. The channel is also moderated by site staff who can remove and ban users who misbehave.

I've tried to do the blockign and it doesn't work too good, i'm using xchat, if anyone can help me figure on how blocking works on there it'd be great!

It's a great idea, but why not use something like Anthrochat, where some members may already be signed up?

Hendikins

why not use something like Anthrochat

We use the IRC server for purposes other than the public channels (#weasyl, #weasyl-projects).

Ended up getting connecting to Weasyl IRC working, thanks to an awesome friend setting up a relay server for me. Shouldn't be necessary, but, well, it works.

And, yes, SSL works. :P

Is the X mode supported by the server? Because I checked my whois, and it's giving out some info that it shouldn't be giving out

The server is running ircd-ratbox (http://www.ratbox.org/), which does not support this feature.

That's a shame, I guess. I was gonna check it out but I really wasn't comfortable with that kinda info publicly available to anyone who runs the command

Here is what your connection should look like to get into the room: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rrrpb81ec0oorka/Screenshot%202014-07-05%2012.55.05.png

Obviously, replace the Nickname/Username/Real name parts for yourself.

Yeeeppp I'm confused too. The server port will not change to 6697 no matter what I do-- there is only a finite pulldown list of 6667, 6668, 6669, 7000, and 9999. I'm using Colloquy.

Kayla-La
07-05-2014, 04:08 PM
You should be able to manually type it in. Colloquy is what I'm using and that's how I did it. Try clicking on the box and typing. If that doesn't work, I really don't know, since it would mean your version would have to be different from mine.

Huzzah! I was wondering when there might end up being an IRC for here. Downside: can't use it on campus, but I can't connect to Anthrochat or Furnet on campus, either.

When i try to connect to your IRC server with chatzilla i get the following error message:

Are you using ssl? It looks like chatzilla uses another command regarding connecting to ssl enabled servers:

Can someone just link a place to download whatever this SSL thing is? Not to be a bug, but I seriously can't figure out how to make SSL work with mIRC, and I've googled a couple of SSL information, all with different links on which SSL to download.

Is there an SSL link you'd recommend?

It's the first link that comes for 'mirc ssl'.

I read the rules, but am still wondering: Would it be okay to advertise an art stream (general rating) that is going on within the chat, or should that be kept strictly to the Art/General forum and never in the chat? Thanks! :3

You're free to advertise art streams as long as you're not spamming the link or anything like that. :>

I hope yours works better than mine does at the moment :XD:
I'll get it eventually.

EDIT: I'm using IceChat and I can't get it to connect for some reason.
Not sure what going on. I have my SSL on and the right port info too.

EDIT: Fixed it lol I was having issues with my Stunnle ^^
All good now.

Unable to connect to IRC network. I can't connect on port 6697 because it simply dies after trying to make contact, and if I try to use the default port 6667 I just get connection refused.

I did a ping and this is what I got

@ShadWolf - When you're connecting on 6697 are you using the following command?

/connect -ssl irc.weasyl.com port 6697

? It does the same thing twice but might yield a result.

Are you planning on adding a web client to the site, where you could enter the chat with your Weasyl username as nick with just a click of a button? It would probably help those who aren't exactly tech savvy, and also it's just so convenient. I used IRC for many years and still I prefer web clients for their convenience. :)

Likely not. But there is always mibbit for web clients:

You just need to put in the server rather than use the dropdown.

Well yeah, but using that is just as much work as starting up any desktop client. My emphasis was on that with a single click you could be in, already with your Weasyl username set as nick.

Man. I can't get any of this working for the life of me.
Tried copying the link i made into a new tab? (can't make it a clickable link until a did a "real" post that's long enough and so on)
Edit: this post was enough?! Whatever, linkified it, so clicking should work.
Should Open a site where you can choose a nick and then you click go and it does the rest (may need to load a few seconds to open the actual channel).

IRC feels too archaic now. I know many have moved on to Discord.
