Hi everybody! I wanted to make a sketchbook dump, thing to put my stuff I'm either working on, abandoned, or random things. That, and a reason to sketch more.

Feel free to comment or critique if you would like (please do!!).

Mostly I have been working on my comic, getting the final character designs down, but I also do some random poses and scenes for practice.

Lovely expressions (especially on your bird character)! The bottom picture with the skateboard is coming along nicely, though personally I'd switch the right foot (my view) to a bit smaller depending on the prespective you're going for, or if you're just wanting it to be a front view maybe extend the length of the skateboard a bit to match. :P Great work overall!

Thank you! I kept fiddling with that foot, but it kept perplexing me.

Inking that last sketch, I'll probably start coloring it here shortly.

Very nice linework. Very very clean. The background on the skater pic feels a tad bit off perspective wise. Perhaps it's because of the weird view I get on my cellphone, but that's just my opinion. The coloring is very appealing.

Thanks! I see what you mean about the background, I kinda haphazardly threw it together and the ramp especially throws it off

Lined! Overall wanted a character that was a bit thicker to fit her personality, but I'm not sure I did it enough.

http://i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t602/Antumbra/EmmaSketch2lines_zps4d1426c6.jpg

and I've been jonesing to do an inked drawing with some heavy shadows so I'm working on this:

You're really good at headshots! Such great expressions too, I really like that character ;3 she reminds me a bit of my human oc but actually has the body to fit her (nice work on that btw!) XDD I may redline the wolfy sketch for u, if i do i'll edit this post :P

I really like the last few you did, maybe if you make the shoulder a little bit bigger it can help with the body type you are going for. Right now she look very strong and lean but the shoulders seem so small to me

Thank you as well! I see what you mean, although I was afraid of her being a little too manly with the broad shoulders. I'll definitely beef them up a little.

lol, don't make them that big xD
just a teeny bit and add some tone, that will help make her look toned and muscular without being a fem-Arnald XD

The front foot where moogle pointed and said "I am not very good at foreshortening"
isnt so bad, though I do think that the foot /ankle (god I forgot what that part is called)
Is a little bit too long compared to the other one.
Maybe moving either the heel closer or the foot farther away might help?
I would probably add a touch of the calf on that leg as well. my opinion though, not saying its right or yours is wrong

Kinda got mixed feelings on this. I feel like it is kinda done, but like it is missing something. I may add a much more detailed background and floor, maybe a little more solid black. Any suggestions?

Looks awesome, ithink that one foot could be wider though.

Maybe tour feeling too much emptiness behind the head, i fell like the ground could trail back a little fartherr. Simply addind in some shading could help though, it wouldn't seem as empty then and the wolf might stand out more

I think the foreshortening is a touch off, and there needs to be some background behind his head. I get the feeling it's a dungeon of some sort, so there's that.

I also really like the shading, it's neat ^^

Some sketches before bed. Does anyone else ever feel more creative right before falling asleep?

http://i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t602/Antumbra/sketchdogs_zpsa88c1860.jpg

Just my doggies, although the second one is a bit of a lie. My other basset hound is the poop eater, this one prefers pillows and magazines. He just had that guilty look on his face.

Yeah I agree, the shading is looking great. Kudos on that pose too. It's really dynamic. =3 My only critique is maybe trying to make the shading look more natural? It feels like you might be using straight black or gray and that tends to muddy colors up. I reccomend using differnet colors to shade.

I could be totally wrong or off base though oAo

Thank you! I was using mostly a dark purple for the shading, but I definitely need to push it more. Whenever I tried to be subtle with it, it definitely came out as flat.

I just looked this up, I had no clue there was a color mixer in photoshop! Thank you!!!!!!! I was debating switching back to coloring in Corel Painter, but I really didn't want to.

I was thinking about changing his colors. He currently is red. Anyone have any suggestions? I might keep it red, but I didn't want to do black (wouldn't match with the black eyes) or white (my 'sona's colors).

He also isn't really half skeleton, it is an illusion. I'll post his bio on my main page some day along with my other characters....

Burnt orange, or gold if it matches the personality, a super deep dark blue or purple gives off a nice dark character effect considering he makes people think he is half dead :P

I really enjoyed corel for a while, haven't used it for a really really long time though, so glad you found the colour mixer :)

wait hold the phone, there is a mixer? lol omfg where?!?
Maybe my photoshop doesn't have one CS3

Dunno when they added it, I have CS5, it is called mixer brush! Looking at that link though, it does the exact same thing, it might just save like half a second so I wouldn't worry. :D

Yeah you guys have it, I don't, I have CS3 however I can buy the brush but I don't see the point. I am sure there are also plenty of people who made them for free DL as well.
I do the mini palette/manual mix when I do line less, it does help though

I think it really comes down to how you want to portray him
personally I would think a hedgehog type hair style would look pretty damn good on an armadillo because they are similar shaped.
not to mention, spiny dinosaurs and turtles like bowser have wicked hair styles

I think thats the worst part... the colour. sometime sI can sketch something like a hot cake but then I just cant get the feel for the colouring and it all looks bleh.
It's all practice, by the time you draw em all maybe you'll have a really good handle on the style of colouring you want to use.

The armadillo guy looks cool, I myself really like to exaggerate on the hair styles, so I would probably spike mine right up there.
I bet it will look awesome coloured.
He looks a tad skinny to me, but that may just be me lol

I bet it will look awesome coloured.
He looks a tad skinny to me, but that may just be me lol

Yea sometimes it almost keeps me from coloring it all together. I just have to remind myself it is learning and if I screw it up, I can always come back to it when/if I get better at it.

I REALLLY wanted to do a spiked mohawk like you and Moogle suggested, but it just didn't fit his conservative personality, so I gave him a flat top. I think I will try that style on another one of my characters though. :ninja:

Really like the Red Dragon one.

For the Armordildo- dillo one, I don't know if it's intentional or not but his head is really wide if you can see his right eye like that.

Gah, definitely not intentional. I was toying around with his head positioning and forgot to adjust the perspective of the eyes.

Thank you!

Try to do one a day. This time....Brooklyn from Gargoyles! I figured I would try and tackle this sketch early since I figured it would be the toughest. With few human facial features, it was kind of tough to give him a different look than the cartoon. I'll probably continue to tweak this one.

Thanks Moogle! Totally agree on the legs, I had a ref pic to help and after like an hour of sketching them I was like:

I think that has to be one of the most frustrating things, to have a reference and still not quite do it right.

Yea, the top of the foot/bottom calf is an odd angle for the rest of the leg. Kinda looks like he is breaking it. I think that is why the character is angry, I just broke his ankle for no good reason. :/ Thanks for the crit! I love the feedback you guys give me, it really helps me in my quest for world domination to be a better artist.

Here is my next thing I'm working on. I wanted to try more dramatic lighting, so I'm trying contre jour that I saw in one of my drawing books. It is where you have that strong backlight and the side facing you is in shadows. I think it is also French, so you know it is good.

http://i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t602/Antumbra/Argus3_zps92f42153.jpg

I also had another question (I'm rambling now, just hit me) that I wanted to ask everyone. So I'm trying to design one of my comic characters, he is supposed to be a very big strong guy, but I don't know what animal to base him off of. I originally had him as a bear, but that was a bit cliche, and I can't use aquatic (they don't exist in my comic) or avian (too many already). Anybody have any fun animal ideas?

Those lighting acenes look cool! I would love to do another pic like that but the old one I did was so... Bad... i never ever posted it xD

Hmm a rhino or a bull sounds good, but you know, there are
Turtles
Walrus'
Elephants
I would totally make a narwahl guy, but the tooth... Damn, would be so awkward ( I wont lie, Ive tried, but he just walks around with stuff gettin caught on the tooth all the time) like stab right into the pop can he brought for lunch, talk about clumsy!

Do you like bugs? How about a beetle?
A badger, those things are big and nasty, so are wolverines.

What about a bison?

Im just full of it tonight, I need to to shut the $&@! Up

...
A jaguar would be awesome...

Some critics I see to help your world domination. First off, I think the head is a bit to big in proportion to the rest. (It would be like a 5-6 heads long character)

And the reason it seem like your character is all in an awkward pose might just be this:
head: pointed to the right
Torso: pointed forward
Hips: pointed forward
:His right leg : pointed to the right

=> hips and legs should be pointing the same way
=> you can't double twist your torso, going from right -> central and then again from central -> right faced.
It would be more logical to have the legs forward.

Unless you are trying to do a chest to the left angle and then hips to the right angle -> twist around the abdomen.
Then you should create more of an 3/4 view for the chest, because it's not enough pronounced yet.

Hope these ideas helped a bit! :)

Good luck with your character!

Thanks for the feedback Velo! I'll definitely have to fix that. I think I'll change his legs/hips to straight. When I take over the world, you can have any country you want that starts with a Z. :P

Thanks also to Moogle and Sam for the animal suggestions, I'm leaning towards bull or panther.

Narwhal would be tricky, I can't imagine they are very social, what with the kissing being tough to do and all

Doing a fun pic, I won't reveal what the rest is, but it obviously features everyone's favorite blue vixen!

Got some feedback in the IRC and I was told to practice not using the airbrush tool when I was coloring. By avoiding using it, hopefully I can go back and learn the basics.....which I suck at. Pretty much I'm trying to do cartwheels before learning to walk. So I wanted to do something non-comic related to practice.

I notice the different eye um expressions, but I feel like the right one could be a little smaller. More like the other side, at this angle the eyebrow bone would overlap the eye wouldn't it?

It kinda does have that sailormoon -esque feel.

I think I did the eyebrow off of a reference, so I'll have to check that one. Her head is slightly pointed upwards and I wanted to do some crazy eyes with the one brow up. I usually dislike that expression because it is overused so much, but I felt it actually fit here since I couldn't do one of her eyes twitching.

the brow still over shadows the eye ever so slightly and thus the change you would make are really minimal.

Figured I would also just keep posting stuff in here so I don't get lazy and not finish them. This character I've been putting off on designing for a long time now. Ooooooh I like this design :3c I don't see much cyber stuff anymore for some reason...
I have to note that the face (and/or head) seems a little too wide to me, although that may just be a function of the species. I'm not particularly knowledgeable outside of felines and canines ; o ;
Also, I don't know if you were going to return and check this more, but you should be careful about how the zipper moves with the folds in the clothes. Zippers obviously don't fold like normal cloth, but you still need to pay close attention to where it's shifting and folding. Also, zipper itself can cause folds if it sticks out in a certain place where normal cloth would fold in or something.
Right now it looks like it's ignoring the collar bones, the folds between the middle of the breasts, and it's folding under the breasts but I'm guessing it would actually just ignore the bottom of the breasts altogether and keep moving on out towards the bottom. Also it looks a little like it's floating to the side in the middle of the breasts, but if you meant for that to just be it moving with the angle, be sure to check the width. (I wish I had a tablet so I could try to show you where exactly I'd change things... ;~; ehh) If all else fails, try getting a zippered thing and simulating this somehow. Or just practice drawing zippers in general. That would be my advice.
BUT. Remember to take my advice with a grain of salt ;n; aha
I really like the hair :3 It looks really pretty and well done! And I'm impressed by the hands ; o ; as you have seen in my thread, I'm not exactly perfect at them... aha ; o ; You're doing pretty great, though! :>

sorry for writing really long paragraphs ;~; I tend to be wordy...

Reminder, though: watch the eye distance! It still looks a little wide from my point of view ;~; Not entirely sure on that though. Just a suggestion. Also the wrist on the right could be a little smaller, I think.
Plus, and this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it at least these last two pictures have had characters in almost the same pose. Just make certain to vary your poses! Repeating yourself isn't good for improvement ; o ; But maybe I just have a small sample size. Ignore this if it's not correct.
I'm liking how it's looking now though! :> Good work with two characters interacting. Multiple bodies is hard ;~; It's coming out well!

Thank you! I'll get to work on those before I started inking.

Yea I am doing somewhat similar poses for now, but only partially by choice. Part of me still wants to experiment, but I'm really trying to focus more on the character design. I'm kinda afraid of doing a design where I will forget part of it later if I hide it with the pose.

This sketch is Bliss approved.

Although seriously, it's looking pretty great ; v ; You're doing better with the zipper, too! Woooo! . v . The foreshortening on the arm is looking pretty great as well :U I'd be a little careful of the hand, though. It looks a little awkward. Kind of long for that viewing angle. I might be wrong, though.
Also; you did the face pretty well in respect to how it squishes and stretches from interaction with the hand, but I'd say you did the hand at too wide of an angle. It should be a little thinner and you'll see less of the knuckles. The knuckles don't always go in a straight line, they curve outward from the palm as well. You'll probably be able to see up to the third knuckle and the fourth will be gone. That's usually how it goes when hands are at that angle.
It's still looking great overall! Good job with the folds, too. I still need to work on those ;~;

Yee! This is awesome! C: I like this. Also I retake my comments about the hands. They look much better now than they did.
ALTHOUGH. Two quick things.
I'm not sure exactly how to fix it, but things don't look right on the right half of the picture and my first thought is to make a shadow moving outwards where his elbow upwards are. I think it just looks... flat? otherwise. Like his arm isn't actually on the table, it's a piece of color behind the arm. It's weird. That's my suggestion for that.
Also, similar thing on the left side with the elbow. Maybe add a shadow around it? :s I'm not entirely sure how to fix it, but watch those two little spots.

I totally agree, the shadows look super wrong on that table for both arms. I'll try to fix it tonight.

AHhhhhhhhhHhhh.... After ten thousand years of procrastinating I'm free. It's time to conquer this thread! You may have thought you were safe form the horror of which is me, Accellerant - The Babbling Brook who Devours Doodles - but you thought wrong Antumbra! Nobody escapes my wrath, nor penetrates my impenetrable fortress!

http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2014/232/d/1/1376174668767_by_accellerant-d7w0a5o.gif
You should have taken that turn at Albuquerque, but now it's far too late to escape me! Now suffer my poor use of proper grammar as I eat your drawings from Pixel to Pixel!

Holy Jesus, the fuck is that? WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!? Is that some non-photo blue goodness I'm seeing in your roughs? I have no idea if those rough's are done digitally or traditionally, but damn man I haven't seen anyone use that in years! You get Exalted Rep status immediately, and I don't care whether or not you just horrifically murdered my personal guards while I was on the way here 'cause I respect seeing stuff like this. I've tried to get into using non~photo blue pencils back when I had the supplies for it, but it just never really stuck to me. Probably 'cause I pressed hard as hell with my materials and I was drawing on waxed paper shortly after producing my rough. So good on ya for keeping up with something I hardly see anymore. P.S. I'm lovin' them Gargoyles, hits me right in the nostalgia!

SWEET CHRISTMAS TREES ON THE FOURTH OF JULY WHILE THE WORLD IS ON FIRE, THE HELL IS THIS?! Is that some hardcore clean line work that looks not only good, but fits in your final pieces? What is this sorcery?! I don't know what pacts you've made in your life, but by the Emperors Holy Cheese & Sausage Cupcakes do you have a good grasp on the quality of your lines! I mean hell, look at that Werewolf you drew back in April, I just can't handle how effective your lines and us of crosshatching are for that illustration! Seriously, I see that as a great portfolio piece which emphasizes the quality of your sketches. I myself have tried doing my own line work, and I quickly realized that in itself is an art form. Once I compare my line work to my original sketch, I kinda wish I never wasted my time to begin with. Line work, I just ...

http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2014/232/c/6/1407193488497_by_accellerant-d7w0d5k.gif

But ya know what I love most of all out of all your works? You have a good understand of your subjects, including throwing out non clashing colours for your works coupled with backgrounds! I'm not going to lie, there's always going to be mistakes here and there, little things that you only notice but an external viewer such as myself doesn't, but non the less that doesn't excuse the fact that your tackling subjects which many use as an excuse not to do because its "too hard". It's in the opinion of this user that it takes true will power to have pushed yourself to the point where a good amount of your illustrations have a mixture of these elements, especially the inclusion of backgrounds. Even the most simplistic of backgrounds you've done helps bring depth to your characters and in turn give us a much more accurate depiction of the emotion behind the scene. In other words, the architecture class you took is paying itself in folds ;D

Oh my, his thread, I believe I have a case of the vapors!

I kind of wanna do icons like that too xP Although I'm currently preoccupied with creating cute FNAF fan art instead ;P
This is the first horror game I have ever enjoyed in the slightest and it's absolutely perfect. Hehe.

BUT. Suggestion time!
I'm not perfectly sure but I'd suggest that you add in not only on-off flickering lights but half-light flickers and make it a little less regular. Also, try making the light a little more bluish-white instead of yellow. The cooler color should give off a darker/creepier look, just like how it looks in the game. Half-dim flickers should make it look more like a light starting to go out than just a light flickering on and off, too.
Definitely a great start, though.
... have to admit that it's freaking me out

Uh. I hate to go back and forth but now it seems just a little too dim ;~; Try keeping it at the same value but simply change the hue to a little bit more of a blueish. Maybe this:

http://i.imgur.com/U1wxvzr.jpg

The other little thing is that I would make the lights flicker just a little bit quicker. e.g.: Seizure warning: includes quickly flickering lights _XBkCkq-eKA

But just a little slower. Between this and your current speed. Yeah?
These are just my suggestions, though :U It looks good as it is, I'd just do it a little differently. So. :P

A bunch of little things on the second one look off. I'm not sure why, exactly. There's something about the character's left (viewer's right) shoulder area. Okay the first one is really cool but it's not entirely obvious that she's coming up from the... magicky... thingy...
So mayyyybe one way around that is to show small ripples around where her body is coming up from the thing. Try that and see how it goes? If it doesn't fit what you want just ignore this. It's hella, though!

And that line art is O 3 O daaamn.

To me the character seems to be more or less peaceful/happy. Especially the eyes makes this look like she's just getting up from bed after good night sleep. Considering she's standing on somesort runes I'd imagine her to be cackling maniacally.

Give her more menancing look either making her appear more angry/malevolent or insane (rounded eyes) look.

I don't really know what I'm talking about. I think it's well done. If you are unhappy about the work, think what kind of feeling you want it to convey. What is the mood of the character and how the viewer should react to it.

Reading through I've already seen people say it quite a few times, but I adore the expressions! you have a way of handling anatomy that makes it seem almost effortless, and checking through the sketchbook was a real treat! I especially love the way you handle your posing, it always gives a clear sense of where the characters are within the space.

Thank you dragonsbelow! Sorry I forgot to reply to this, I've been super distracted from drawing lately. ^_^;

Peeked at Bliss' and Moogle's sketchbooks and it made me want to doodle more to keep the juices flowing, here is some quick sketches

http://i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t602/Antumbra/Sketch1_zps763bad64.jpg

Almost ready to kickstart my comic! Just got to figure out how to do the beginning O_o I've been tinkering with the opening scene for months, and I think I should just go with one idea and run with it.

Top right sketch is marvelous (top left is your face after checkin out my thread akeke! :giggle:)! You should keep up these doodles man, always love seeing them. Each ones got their own character, and I think that's really hard to capture but you seem to do it with ease. AND... COMIC?! I'm down for reading this! -pushes you into the mojo zone- :inlove:

Keewwlll, Best of luck on creating the comic! I tried but I ran out of time and then I forgot what was supposed to happen, then it got stolen and just, Never did again!!! lol

the sketches are really nicely done, I like the one in the bottom right corner best. its the simplicity of it.

As soon as I can get the first scene down for my comic, it is on like Donkey Kong!

Thanks Sam! YOU HAD YOUR COMIC STOLEN?! O_O

Sammacha
02-12-2015, 09:19 PM
Yeah it got stolen :/
I had a sketchbook of 80 pages stolen from the art class room when it was left there to be marked.
I had only finshed about 50 pages but yeah.
It was basically the origin of "Sammacha" my character and how and why she is "her world"
After that I just gave up on it. I tried to do it again but I just forgot things and it fell apart.
Not that the story was complete anyways, I kept forgetting what was gonna happen so it changed sometimes.
It was more of the basics of a comic story board then a real comic book, but hey... its not like I never put any work into it.

I think I know who took it as well. My assumption is that they burned it. (they burned lots of things, I know they stole pokemon cards form some kids and burned those as well as math books, wtf right?)

GAH, been so busy lately! Doc told me I have either GERD (probably) or stomach cancer (less likely), some schmuck hits and run on my car, family with surgery, etc. Good news is though, I have all these ideas to draw!

This is looking really good so far. Your inking is especially smooth, clean and natural looking. I think my only minor suggestion is that you should consider doing more variation in line weight and width depending on where the subjects are in space. For example the figures' shoulders and faces would have slightly bolder, more obvious lines. It would certainly enhance the feeling of the extreme perspective.

If you're too far along though, don't worry about that right now since the piece is looking great regardless. Perhaps something to think about for practice in a future piece.

I support this! Be daring, let the lines help tell the story and create action. I think you can definitely succeed at it, considering you do great work as it is. I think your art would improve that much more from such experimenting.

Thank you! My comic is going to be action-based but I have to draw some whimsical stuff, I find it to be a great stress relief.

My comic was going to be a world where a small percent of the population has always been able to do miraculous things like magic. Now most are locked away in walled off cities and the main character is locked in (he thinks by accident to some degree) and he joins a group of B-list police special force group while trying to find a way out.

It's a work in progress, but I've got a decent chunk of the beginning written out.
