Many artists enjoy interacting with others live as they draw. Whether it’s to offer helpful advice, receive helpful critique, or just for company, art streams are extremely popular! With this in mind, we’ve coded a system that gives artists a simple and easy way to advertise their streams on Weasyl.

When an artist is ready to open their stream, they can set their status to “online” in their profile settings. When switching the status the artist can also add a link to the stream and short description to describe what it is.

Once an artist has changed their profile settings, a “streaming now” link will appear on their profile alongside a green light. A notification will also go out to all their followers informing them the stream has started. There will also be a section on the front page for users to view current streams by people you follow. Artists also have the option of selecting the “later” setting in their streaming settings. If an artist sets the state to “later”, followers will still get a notification, but the light next to the link on the artist’s profile will be a different color, and the stream will not appear on the front page until the status is changed to “online”.

Once an artist is done with their stream they can set the status to offline, which will remove the notifications to followers and the note on the front page. Because we understand that sometimes people will forget to switch their stream status when they are done, it will automatically switch to offline after six hours, neatly cleaning everything up until the artist is ready to stream again.

We look forward to seeing our users interact and have fun throughout the creation process and hope this feature makes streaming notifications an easy process for out artists. Feel free to join the discussion on this feature, or just hang out with other Weasyl users, here on our forums!

This sounds pretty neat, but what if the stream lasts more than six hours? When I do stream, it can easily last over 10 hours at once.

Could there be an option in your profile to set the time it will take before it shuts down on its own? I don't think it'd be too complicated to make.

Ah yes, I was worried this might be the case. I'll talk with our coders and see what we can do. It's very possible we may just extend the amount of time, but I can't make any promises without talking to them first!

Just getting back to you, we will be setting that time limit to 12 hours instead.

how about a "time extension" button, so if the person is still currently streaming they can just go tap that button and it will reset the timer thing (or just add some time) that should solve any problems.
:3

Also I have a question! will you be able to view all live streams on the front page or will it only show people you are watching? I would like to be able to check em all out.

We hadn't thought of that, but honestly it would be so easy to implement that we might as well throw it right in! :3

The page pointed to by the "More Live Streams" link will likely give signed-in users the option, whereas for signed-out users obviously it has to show all users (since signed-out users won't have a following list!).

Cool! Might want to have something like, (streaming notification will auto shut off in 'time') [Extend Button]

and thanks for the quick reply :3

So, just to clarify, this will be available to everyone and not just premium members, right?

You guys have come up with some spectacularly intuitive things that are very with-the-times for today's art community! My hat's off to ideas like these!
