View Full Version : Things you do instead of drawing what you meant to / wanted to draw.

I don't know about you, but I have adhd, and find myself distracted easily. Then at the end of the day I'm like fuck what happened I really wanted to work on ____.

Instead I'm playing minecraft, drawing other pointless doodles, painting textures just for the sake of practice, working on my website, finding gazillions of pictures that I think maybe I can use as reference material for a later picture (sometimes this is intended on being used for what I really want to be drawing, but ends up being me finding a bunch of other shit I want to use to draw from for other pictures).

Not saying that any of those activities are really bad or anything, just saying I sometimes let the day get away from me and I'm left being annoyed because I wanted to draw all day and get something accomplished and it just didn't happen.

What about you guys, what do you get distracted from your art / projects with?

I watch looots of documentaries. They give me inspiration to draw but then my inspiration craps out, so I watch more lol.

I procrasturbate on forums, watch YouTube videos and make/drink absolutely massive quantities of coffee! Can't be doing myself any favours but it just kinda happens. :x3:

When I play some random online games, they always end up taking at least 6 hours of my life per day for the next 2 months.

Good thing I Hearthstone isn't that addictive.

And ever since I began drafting and planning for fiction again, I've been keeping myself busy writing. These really prevent me from finishing my stuffs.

Don't really do this often. I like to stay disciplined.
Although I guess when it happens, I'll just end up drawing something I wasn't intending to, which ends up being a good thing a lot of the time.

Sometimes I will just end up watching Twitch.tv or Youtube, but that's normally on days when I should be taking a rest from the draws anyway.

Sleep. I will sleep forever and get nothing done. It's currently my biggest problem. My bed is just too comfortable and I don't want to leave it.

I get distracted from drawing pictures by drawing other pictures.

So I have a shit ton of unfinished pieces that I will probably never completely finish, or put a fraction of my full potential into, because the workload becomes overwhelming.
Which leads to a lot of "Okay, I'm just going to flat color everything and randomly slap some shines on and maybe color the lineart just a little bit. Okay, done."

I somehow end up on tumblr, checking ALL of my messages on everything I can find, looking through some refs, reading, play video games, play with my dog, bother people, look at music videos/parodies, or do little doodles.

For whatever reason, just as I'm about to go to bed then I get sad and I say to myself: I could have done that art thing... could have, and I didn't. For shame.
Roll over and read fanfiction.

Well, firstly I have a one year old son. So I find myself constantly waking up at 8-8:30 am and thinking to myself 'Yeah I'm gonna get SO MUCH DONE TODAY!!' then the next time I check the clock it's like 3pm and I'm like'... I can still do some stuff!' Then the next thing I know it's 9pm and I'm putting my son to bed. I'm so relieved to actually have some time to do what I want that I get really distracted really easily. Then suddenly I look at the clock and it's midnight and I curse because I know I need to go to bed to wake up with mah baby. xD it's difficult but I think I'm getting a lot better at it. I mean, sometimes I can actually get some laundry done.
I'll try to make lists and stick to them but so many things pop up during the day oh my lanta it's always just so busy.

Omg some of these I'm laughing so hard at, probably because I can relate like 100% to. Sleep, tumblr & GAMING. Minecraft & Maple tend to get me although recently I've been pretty on-top of drawing; motivation's got ma back.

I play minecraft, browse forums (these one in particular have been pretty popular for me). I look through the gallery on here or on DA, I go through tumblr. I got upstairs and cuddle with the cats, I get bored of all of that, find something to snack on, then start over again. At least once a day for the past week or so I've been taking a shower just for the sake of sitting under the water.

And then I might build something on my minecraft project, or work on my thumbnails for my comic, or work on world/prop building for my comic, or draw some other picture.

Right now I'm trying to take it easy cause the cold has been upsetting my shoulder, so there has been much more bothering the cats, wandering the apartment at random, and eating food cause just being at the computer upsets my shoulder.

Yep, that's me. I've got too many unfinished drawings sitting around. Some of them are almost done, and then I start working on something else and forget. >>;

Other reasons for not working on things include: Reading this forum, browsing reference images, browsing tutorials on various things, playing videogames (especially Terraria), watching videos/cartoons, and chatting on Skype/Steam/IRC. Also, sleeping.

EDIT: I forgot, eating. I can't draw while I eat, so then I watch videos in the meantime, and get distracted all over again.

Unfortunately that is a good portion of my day right there. I just pull up the image and look at it, minimize and go on youtube. Rinse, lather, repeat.

I have a day job :/ All I can think of while I'm at work is how much I'd rather be drawing/painting/sculpting.

My goal tho is to get to the point where I DON'T have to worry about a day job just to pay the bills.

Honestly, the only thing that keeps me from drawing these days is that I'm just not interested in doing it. I'm not surrounded by what I feel is an environment that's conducive to draw anymore. On top of that, the distractions available to me require less energy to engage than pulling out the sketchpad and doodling mindlessly. What makes it worse is that a good few of those distractions offer immediately satisfaction, a double whammy to any desire to be artistically productive. That's something I'm working to overcome. This is all before considering that what I do for a living is as far away from drawing as you could possibly get. I imagine it's something similar for a lot of other folks.

I get distracted often by pushing the main work aside and sketching random pictures to keep to myself and 1 friend.
It sucks they're not the kind of content I can post in public. These constant urges get in the way of the important pictures >_>

I tend to be staring at computer screens for whatever reason. Usually watching something on Netflix or some anime friends are telling me to get into. I waste quite a bit of time looking at other people's artwork. Sometimes it's the pornographic variety but not all the time. I try to take notes on how I want my art style to be or what I feel it should be at. Should be a good thing but my "research" can distract me to the point that I psych myself out and don't end up drawing.

There's also some emotional components getting in the way or trying to draw and nothing good comes of it.

I dunno.

What about some ruggedly handsome cyclops dudes?

That happens to me too. I have to avoid Skype sometimes, but then of course that also lends more weight to the problem.

I have way too much distractions available to me... so I get nothing done ever. Videos, anime, films, music, people to talk to... hell, probably I'd just lie down and complain about being bored faster than starting a drawing nowadays. >.>

Working my day job or Skype, pretty much.

I can have my art program open and a sketch in progress and forget about it for an hour because people are talking to me, whoops.

Are you me? This sounds like me.
Either I get distracted with the conversation and forget about the drawing, or (sometimes) I focus more on the drawing than the conversation and go quiet in Skype.

That, or link way too many progress pics. (I wish I could stream stuff, probably would be better, haha.)

It's possible! Are you drowning in student debt for an ill-advised art degree? We may in fact be the same person if so.

But yeah, I get this high from doing art, and it just makes me really chipper and talkative and prone to stop doing art and chat with my friends. XD Oddly enough, this slows down my art productivity. Weird!

Like most procrastination, it begins with me getting stuck on something. Then I try to find a youtube video for a solution. Then 3 hours later I'm still watching game grumps. It's a pretty bad habit I'm guilty of. But music can keep you back on track as long as you dont endlessly skip.

JIDEO VAAAAAAMES. I'm trying to get away from them now to focus more on my art and other important things in my life and I think it's going pretty smoothly but I still go back to them from time to time. D8 I love those things way too much.
