Avians need love too! <3

It used to be that there were very few avian characters to be found, but lately I have been seeing them pop up quite a lot.

Anybody have an avian character?
Favorite avian species you've seen?
What about real life pets; any bird lovers out there?
Favorite avian artists? I know there are a few.
Things you like/dislike about avian characters?

I definitely love being a bird-brain, but sometimes it's a little bothersome. I usually get one of two responses when I want to have my character drawn: "Ugh I can't possibly (or don't want to) draw a bird," or "Woah, now that's a challenge... I'll try it!" I definitely can understand, those beaks make conveying emotion pretty difficult.

I love birds and the idea of flying! One of my most-drawn characters is the phoenix I have in my icon (https://www.weasyl.com/submission/373417/mercy-reference). I love phoenixes. Griffons too.

I've got the same problem when it comes to expression and bird faces. I've been trying for so long to nail down a good way to draw expressive beaks.

I love drawing birds! This is something not obvious from looking at my gallery at the moment, alas, but I love the ferocity in the eyes of a raptor, and the scraggly charm of a grackle. Wings are a lot of fun to draw, too; I just love how detailed they are.

My favorite birds are the scrappy ones that gather in zoos and in parking lots. Crows and grackles aren't classically 'attractive' birds I guess, but crows are eerily smart and I just love the sheen of a grackle's feathers. I don't own any birds, though, as I don't think I have the temperament for it. I'll just admire them from afar.

What would vex me about having an anthro avian character would be this: wings and arms? Or arm-wings? Feather fingers, or claw fingers? (My preference would be arms/fingers that mirror the look of a bird's feet and separate wings, but I don't know if that screams 'look i have wings and arms, mary sue master race, yo!' or not.)

I don't think beaks make things too difficult, provided there's some squishin' room around the corners of the character's mouth. Or I guess if you just pick a personality from the get go and sort of pick an appropriate face/beak shape to go with it. I think it might be hard to convey a grin kind of expression, but open-mouthed glee is pretty cute too. :D

I should draw more birds. :>

Birds are one of my favorite things to draw and play with (If they let me)
They are such smart and interesting creatures. Well not all of them are smart >.<
So many varieties and different colors. I really enjoy watching birds interact with everyday items.
I know someone who had a parrot, he was like a small child and so fun to interact with. I think its favorite toy was a rattle and toy with buttons that played music. He would always shake them around.

My favorite are birds of prey but I also like other birds like chickadee's and ducks which I feed by hand in the park :D
I can't really think of a bird that I don't like off hand though I know there are some.

There is a nature house a bit of a drive away that has a display on about birds of prey and I am going to go and visit there so that I can interact with and draw the birds. I think it will be a lot of fun. I make it a habit to draw or study birds at least once a month.

I want a pet bird but I think it's going to wind up being impossible since I own two incredibly prey drivey cats. Maybe if I keep it in the bedroom but ehhh. I don't want to make it too scared with the cats outside or something like that. Dusky conure was my first choice.

I used to have some avian characters but none really "stuck", including a chicken and a cardinal. I'd like to make one eventually though that I'll actually use. It'll probably be a griffon, but i'unno what species. Probably a non bird of prey and a clouded leopard.

I love birdies! They are so much fun to watch and listen too.

I'm actually working on a feathersona for myself based off of a Mountain Chickadee since they such are cute little balls of fluffy feathers and like me, they can't sit still for too long.

I think birds are fantastic, my favorite being little ones like chickadees and sparrows. I also like the bright pretty ones, like cardinals and bluejays. In fact, I considered making an alternate 'sona that is a bluejay :3

I work at a zoo and oftentimes I get to work the bird exhibit, where they fly free and can be fed and pet and stuff. Plus, cages full of budgies and cockatoos that like to walk on your shoulder. I'd love to own a parrot one day, one that I can take on adventures with me c: and that can talk of course.

I would also love to have a parrot but I feel sad because often they outlive their owners and then are homeless :(
I think that's the saddest part about it. Otherwise I would have no issues with having a life long birdie buddy.

I am very jealous of my friend who own a hawk. He lives in another country though.

-yes, my main character's a raven (obv I mean come on)
-Ravens and peafowl are my favorite that I've seen.
-Wish I could get an African Pied or something, but those fuckers are messy. Besides that, I've always had cats growing up, so no bird pets.
-Hoot (https://www.weasyl.com/~hoot) is the first that comes to mind, but there are lots more c:
-Like: Wings and beaks and fluffbutts and ~everything~
Dislike: Beaks are hard to show emotions with for some people. And shoulder wings.

Fuck shoulder wings.

Avians are super dank. My best furry friend (https://forums.weasyl.com/vbulletin/member.php?2902-Butterflygoddess) is one of those.

If I ever make a second 'sona it will almost certainly be an avian. Or reptile. But I love teh burds.

Burds. <3

I love avians in general, including gryphs, phoenixes, etc. My favorite kind... I dunno honestly. XD My fursona has a phoenix form, so I guess I'm into vaguely bird-of-prey avians.

You know what really grinds my gears? When somebody draws a mammilian character with feathers and/or wings and calls it an "avian." Putting feathers and wings on a dog doesn't make it an avian.

I feel like there's a special kind of charm hidden in the seductive eyes of that an Avian char.

I guess that's why they always throw the word "Sharp eye" at birds and stuffs beside the fact they really do have sharp eyes.

So yeh, I have one avian char that I really like. It's a red falcon mage char who always looks like he's mad. Force him to wear a glasses and make him "A bird with bad eyesight" and he's good to go.

Used to have birds around as a pet when I was a kid. They're all gone now.

The selling point for avian character? Beside going OMFGKAWAII like most cute chars, it's always the sharp eyes. Then there's the fact that when designing a cloth for them, you have to leave a spot here and there open for their wings and stuffs while also keeping the weight rather low (or they will be too heavy to flaw). It's fun working on those kind of design.

I love birds! They're so fun to observe, as well as draw. My friends all think I'm a bit of a bird-brain, haha.

I have quite a few avian characters now, more than I expected myself to make. On Weasyl, I only have two, a Bali Starling named Bayu, and a Golden Pheasant who is still in need of a name.
https://www.weasyl.com/submission/969408
https://www.weasyl.com/submission/957506/golden-boy

I've got more back on my FA account:
A Rock Pigeon and a Steller's Jay (named Maya and Stella, respectively),
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14181690/

Two fancy pigeons (Jacobin and Schmalkalden Moorhead breeds, named Geraldine and Magnus)...
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14734181/

...and a Mourning Dove named Luto.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12711716/
I've still got a few more in the works... So many birds.

As for real-life birds, my favorites are hummingbirds, pigeons, and birds-of-paradise. Pigeons are real sweet and goofy, and hummingbirds are tiny but aggressive, I love that! And birds-of-paradise are just over-the-top ridiculous, while still being beautiful.

I like how varied avian characters can be, without even needing to add unnatural colors to the character (not that I mind that... Heck, my own fursona is purple). Birds come in all sorts of wonderful color schemes and interesting shapes, and that makes it pretty fun to make avian characters. It's also interesting to see different artists' takes on what to do with the forelimbs.

Interpreting the wings is also one of my dislikes, however. There's so many variations that sometimes I'm not quite sure what to choose... Scaled talons? Full wings? Feathered hands...? Something in between? I also sometimes dislike drawing wings, partly because they tend to cover up the body of the character if one isn't careful with their posing and angles. I tend not to give my avian characters full wings for this reason. This also may be partly due to the fact that I'm not very good at drawing wings just yet... Bird tails are also rather difficult for me to draw well, for some reason. Hopefully that will change, with practice.

Hoo, that's a lot of talking about birds. Now just imagine what my poor friends go through once I get started on the topic. XD

I like birds of paradise too, so brilliant and exotic. <3

But I also have gotten into birds with unusual beaks. Like Flamingos and kiwis. (Also how adorable are kiwis? I wanna cuddle one just once)

And Kiwimon was kinda one of my fav digimon too.

Allow me to manifest myself inside the entrails of this thread.

For those who do not know me, I am the exquisite and overtly finespun raven.
And in real life, I also have a passion for birds, especially ravens and crows as I am fascinated by their intelligence and opportunism, as well as their appearance in various mythologies.
Birds of prey amaze me as well. I remember the moments when I had the opportunity to hold a buzzard, and a big, majestic aquila/eagle during my first reenactment season. It was a very satisfying moment holding just majestic creatures, so full of intelligence which radiates from their eyes. (i got neat pics too)

Falconry is truly something I keep my ears spurred for. Would be neat to do that someday.

There is nothing I dislike about avian characters.
Also, permit me to link an artwork by a certain person named "Royalty", I think those who like avians will find it funny.

https://www.weasyl.com/submission/981242/the-advantages-of-beaks

Also, I noticed that there is a lack in the diversity of avian characters in the fandom. For example, I never came to see a Nightingale character. Nightingales... who are renowned for their beautiful chirps, for their frail appearance...

Would Black Skimmer beaks count as unusual? They've got this funky underbite (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/14/Black_Skimmer_Close_Flying.jpg) going on.
Surf Scoters are also neat, here's one picking up some sort of shellfish. (http://www.bayjournal.com/images/article_images/large/2008-January-3254-img-1.jpg)

That is a cute comic! ...Does anyone happen to know what kind of bird the griffin on the left is? I know it's some sort of parrot, but beyond that, I can't remember what the name is. I'm asking because I have a keychain (http://36.media.tumblr.com/cf73f79c593a3d17972bdf7162348119/tumblr_mnqyx2pCxX1qdurmyo4_1280.jpg) (center one) that is the same species, and I cannot for the life of me remember what it's called!

I haven't really noticed a lack of diversity, myself. I suppose a few species pop up more than others (eagles, ravens, bearded vultures, and blue jays seem to be popular), but I see enough of other species to balance it out, in my opinion. I will say that I've never seen a nightingale character, though. I think people tend to be more drawn to birds with striking patterns and colors, and the poor nightingale is simply a plain (but pretty) brown.
Although, you've just given me an idea for a drawing, thank you. XD Perhaps I'll draw it out when I have some more free time...

Since we're linking art things, this (https://www.weasyl.com/submission/900370/sparrow-and-toucan) is one of my favorite gryphon drawings. I enjoy the rest of their gallery too, particularly their "Grifflets".

Not gaudy enough, by bird standards. V:
I do like the spoonbills, such an interesting beak shape.

For some reason I just remembered the Jacana bird. Jacana's (http://carolinabirds.org/Images1LG/Jacana_ChrisEason.jpg)bills are not oddly shaped, but their feet are ridiculously big. It's even more exaggerated when they're chicks (https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3329/3273645031_a1e5aea2d8.jpg)!

Makes me wonder why so many people aim for crows and ravens then... ohh... but who am I to talk? haha! Haha, nothing wrong with liking a popular species! I do also wonder why they're so popular though. Perhaps it's because crows and ravens seem to be everywhere, in literature/visual media as well as in real life.

Some birds tend to stay in only natural or only urban environments (for example, I see mourning doves in more natural areas, and rock pigeons in more urban areas, but not the other way around), but crows don't seem to have much preference, as I see them everywhere. They even seem to enjoy the rain, as that doesn't stop them from making an appearance. XD

I'm not sure how widespread crows and ravens are in the real world besides from what I've seen (which, admittedly, isn't much), but they seem popular in the fictional world as well (See: Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven", Maleficent's familiar, Aesop's fables, Native American folklore, the list goes on). Ravens and crows tend to be actual characters in stories too, not just a random bird that is only observed briefly (as is the case in Aesop's fable "The Spendthrift and the Swallow").

I think that maybe since more people are familiar with crows and ravens due to their widespread presence, many are drawn to choosing them as fursonas compared to other birds... Sort of how many people are familiar with dogs, and to some extent, wolves, and so many people choose a canine of some sort as their fursona.

Also, crows and ravens seem to be easier to relate to and identify with than many other birds, possibly due to their curiosity and high level of intelligence. That might also factor into why so many stories are written about them, too.

Owls can be really adorable. X3 I'm a bit surprised I don't see that many owls in the fandom, though. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.

(What timing... As I was in the middle of writing this post, a pair of Towhees hopped by in front of my window, and I was completely distracted from my typing... I really am a bird-brain. oZo;)

Ummm, no. Birds don't tend to get along with me. I don't understand most of their interaction mannerisms either. Not to say all hate me. My grandmother has a green African parrot named Lurch who loved me and would do little butt-wiggle dances across my fingers. Let alone start choking up food to feed me. Weird, but sweet in its intent.

For my general lack of connection with birds I have no birdsonas or what have you. BUT I do have some old traditional art of four bird characters. And random birds can show up in my art at times.

This guy is a nice jock at a high school.
Kirkpatrick (http://d.facdn.net/art/catterhatter/1265130054/1265130054.catterhatter_bmke.jpg)

Maur'Whist (http://orig01.deviantart.net/2727/f/2013/123/d/3/maur_whist_by_sigilofdreams-d63x93w.jpg)

More recent digital sketch of a Warforged I made (from Pathfinder D&D). He's not actually a bird, but he was made to have a bird-like appearance when he was rebuilt. He had been destroyed once but didn't die. Still his psyche was badly injured and he had no will to live as he was being reconstructed. My main Warforged, Dolen, asked him what he enjoyed in life or made him happy. He responded that the yellow birds would keep him company in the trees. So when he was remade he was fashioned to be a little like them.
Ikteros (http://orig15.deviantart.net/f0e0/f/2013/118/4/f/ikteros_by_sigilofdreams-d63fzjg.jpg)

I have a whole series (really old) involving women and birds.
Pact of the Lady (http://orig13.deviantart.net/3878/f/2013/123/d/b/pact_of_the_lady_by_sigilofdreams-d63xg53.jpg)

It's sad I don't have anything in color really other than this one freebie I did back when I was still trying to get the hang of making digital artwork. So it is pretty awkward.

I don't have a avian fursona/character but I used to have a Red lored Amazon and his name is Louie! We still have him but he lives with my parents so I'm able to see him, only once a year.(I moved very far away from my family)
He looks pretty much exactly like this

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/27/b6/b2/27b6b29524bc59239469e7b9910acb2f.jpg

Out of everyone he seemed to like me the most and I'm able to pet him without being bitten unlike my sister in which he hates! He will leap from one side to the other if she goes up to his cage. I've taught him to say few things from words (yes even swear words, lol) whistling and noise of a plane he sometimes goes of on a shouting spree and I tend to encourage him haha. "Wikkie wok woooo!" He's wonderful and I really miss him now talking about him :)

My grandpa used to have a small aviary in his back yard and would show us them when we went over. I can't recall the birds names but would know them if I saw them. I've also volunteered at a local bird adoption helping feed them and cleaning out there cages. There were few small birds and even hard some larger birds such as Macaws. They are beautiful.

Birds are really wonderful animals. I like how vast they are, not only colors but some of there vocal range and looks are quite beautiful. I've only seen a few avian furstuits but not many. I do hope they become more popular.

In real life I just think birds are the best animal species ever despite me not having any kind of domesticated bird.

Drawings... I think they're very hit or miss. I agree they could use more love, but in, well, beefy form >_>
I do have pics of one. A gryphon. For complicated reasons I can't share them publicly. Which is a shame.

Wings are absolutely fun to draw...it's funny how when I first started they were stick limbs with feathers draped off of them but studying the form of folded and unfolded wings helps quite a bit, now I draw what resembles wings better than used to.

Although admittedly I could use more work on them, there are specific angles and bends to wings in flight that can be captured differently.

As for real birds...always been fond of African grays, I wanted one someday.

I never used to care much for birds, until I met my partner. His character is a raven, and he also had pet birds IRL. He taught me how to read birdy emotions and body language, and now I think they can be just the most adorable things ever! Right now we live with a white dove, who sings for us and gets really sassy over what shelves belong to her.

Hoping to make a raven mask in the coming year as well :D

Avian representing! You don't see many penguins around, though I know of a few!

Anybody have an avian character?
My fursona is a leucistic rockhopper penguin!

Favorite avian species you've seen?
Penguins. Derp!

What about real life pets; any bird lovers out there?
I have a cockatiel and a zebra finch!

Favorite avian artists? I know there are a few.
Uhmm, I honestly don't know!

Things you like/dislike about avian characters?
Beaks can be a pain sometimes. Also you get confused for other species, such as my fursuit being called an owl or a chicken. NAAH.

This entire thread reminds me of how bad I would like to make a vulture-sona. (Condor, Bearded Vulture they are just such awesome animals)
