I love my 360 controllers, but my Xbox 360 hasn't been powered on in a month. Hurray for Steam and it's games support of Xinput controllers! Anyway, controllers can be a bit boring and getting more unique special edition controllers can be expensive and if you already have two, do you really want to spend another $60 to get a green one?

I actually have the Coral Pink Xbox 360 controller, which I called about 45 different EB Games/Game Stops to locate used, but it's a pastel pink and I'm more of a hot pink kitty. Finally I realized that eBay always have all sorts of neat, Chinese made, after market parts for peanuts and I set off to find replacement shells. Pay dirt. :D

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-Set-Full-Shell-Cover-Case-Buttons-for-Xbox-360-Wireless-Controller-/171154532240?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&var=470297538148&hash=item27d99ae790

Xbox 360 controller shells in just about any color from a bag of Skittles. $9 each, free shipping and all you'll need is a Torx T8 Security screw driver to swap them. I picked up both the hot pink and lime green shells (I have a black controller as well) plus the screw driver for an extra $3. The best advantage here is that new, third party controllers can be absolutely terrible, but just swapping shell parts on a first party controller lets you keep the first party button quality while getting third party color choices.

Outside of primary colors, there's even neatly silk screened and hydropainted shells you can get that would be far far more unique, and obviously shells for other consoles as well.

So I thought it'd be a fun discussion on customizing controllers and other odds and ends to make them more unique, personal, and not break the bank while doing it. :D

I'm pretty happy with my 360 Limited Edition chrome red controller, but I certainly wouldn't mind a set of metal triggers and buttons to give it a bit more of a durable feel, maybe some different springs to modify the stiffness of the triggers. I'm personally really happy with the thumbsticks and the shell itself, though if I could get a real aluminum shell that'd be really sweet.

I have a soft spot for yellow or orange transparent shells.

Modding controllers huh?

Sounds nice to customize up your controllers and make them better in the process. I've never done this sort of thing before.

I'm not a particular fan of the Xbox360 controllers, they feel like I'm more holding a brick than controller, I find my comfort fits nicely with PS3/4 Controllers, they're just the perfect right size and feel light too. The only problem I would find with those controllers that after using once they start turning this sticky greasy on the analogue sticks, probably due to sweat from hands while playing. Would be nice to mod up those controllers with something to replace analogue sticks with something a little better so that doesn't happen, and improve the trigger buttons.

It seems like all these shells are for wireless controllers, but I use a wired one because I really didn't care to mess with Microsoft's shitty proprietary wireless adapter. :c

There are shells for wired ones too (http://www.morbidstix.com/wired-xbox-360-controller-shells/).

You can get grey market versions for about $10 as well, I have one but it doesn't seem to work with my pink controller. It works with my black one and racing wheel but it constantly drops the pink one for some reason. I've ordered ANOTHER grey market one in hopes that it improves things. FYI, the pink one works perfect with the Xbox 360 itself.

I'll post pictures of my modifications when I can, but I only ordered this week and while the shipping is free, Hong Kong to Canada is like 3 weeks. :X

Thanks, though $25 is more than I want to pay for a piece of molded plastic. That's almost half the price of a new controller itself.

I wouldn't mind modding a controller if it wasn't stupidly expensive.
There's no reason why a plastic shell should cost $30.

The Modsticks ones are likely a fair bit more expensive due to their rather detailed paint jobs. It's not nearly as simple a thing to do as solid ABS plastic in any given color or tossing a chrome job atop that. Myself, I sorta like the idea of the bold colors I'm going with, reminds me of the playful N64 days. And the kits I ordered were only $8.99 with free shipping, which is FAR more reasonable. :D Though it's true that there don't seem to be a lot of cheap wired models readily on eBay, but if you like mix and matching, the TOPS o the wireless ones should fit wired controllers, as should any buttons or bumpers.

I was just looking at the Wiimote ones, which were $30.

And the PS4 ones are $80. Ack!

$9 isn't bad at all.
If I was going to do anything like this, it would probably be classic NES-style stuff.

Maybe if I get more into online/PC gaming I'd consider modding a controller if not for the performance then for the aesthetic, but right now I'm content with the cheap Logitech game pad I got for $20. Of course, cheap is subjective here but when compared to the more high-end controllers, $20 is pretty cheap.

The first shell came in the mail today! But the Torx 8H screwdriver I need did not, so I can't make the swap just yet. Also, this kit did NOT come with the battery holder, which was shown in the item photo. Someone is getting negative feedback on eBay and won't see it fixed until they ship me my part. :/

So I have the second shell from China, though still waiting on the screwdriver from the United States. In the meanwhile, I can't figure out which way I should put these together. Hot pink and lime green? Or inverted watermelons? Opinions?

The inverted colours look very nice together. If the parts fit flush together then that's what I'd go for. :D

They're carbon copies of each other actually. I think that all these shells created by taking castings of a legit Microsoft controller, then making their own mold from that. Every marking is identical, but veeeery fine details are slightly smudgy, a tell of detail lost by the recasting process. So they'll fit each other and should even mate with ligit components. The shells came with other parts, sticks, buttons, all that, but a dumb shell is one thing, I'm not about to try out counterfeit buttons. I'll keep all the guts of the legit controller. :D

I mangled the security pins off the Torx 8H screws with a 2mm flat head, and was able to get'em apart and then work with a standard Torx 8. Mission accomplished!

They look all happy and cheery, like Skittles or Smarties! :D They'll be great for when friends are gathered round the couch to play Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed on Steam. ^.^ I think I need to get a third one though, maybe a forth. Orange and purple still top the list for me there.

Aww, they look very nice individually :)

I still think they look cool the other way too!
