Imho, mascoting is quite a bit different than fursuiting. Personally, I play the character Louise the Meerkat at the Indianapolis zoo c:

I've had my ups and downs in mascoting. I've gotten punched, tackled, kicked where it counts, and got heat stroke once, but that's the risk you gotta take, haha.

So, mascoting can include anything. For your school? zoo? charity? sports team?

Talk about your mascoting endeavors and share what character(s) you play.

Hi, I don't mean to be ignorant, but what's the difference?

Oh, you're fine.
I think the difference is that people don't normally associate mascots with furry fandom, and they are often more marketed characters for advertising purposes and stuff like that.
I've mascoted and gone fursuiting and they are very different experiences for me. Since I represent a certain organization or company, I have a bit more pressure to perform/entertain. Going to a con, you have a lot more freedom, and the fursuit is much more personal then that of a normal mascot.
I mean, you wouldn't see your average everyday furry throwing teeshirts at a sporting event c:
