Inspired by the "Top 5 Bands" thread, this one is the same but we post our favorite music from video games.
It can be a soundtrack, remix, or even ambiance. Just post your favorites.

1. Rocket Jump Waltz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrS7bezmsdk) (Team Fortress 2)
2. Ridley's Lair (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pogkiSPJPX4) (Super Metroid)
3. Kraid's Lair (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZeGC7e9M_w) (Metroid: Zero Mission)
4. Beware the Forest's Mushrooms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abDCsQrDLTE) (Super Mario RPG)
5. The Dark World (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sslj06K-Nlw) (The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past)

There are so many good ones out there, it's not easy to pick just a few.

There's no way in hell that I'm going to be able to narrow this down completely, without changing it every five seconds, so I'll give you my top 5 game soundtracks with the best songs from each:

1. Lifeforce:
- Stage 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYXREcF2daE)
- Stage 5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ53Kg-O4eA)

2. Megaman 2:
- Metal Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=si8HiBgcg_U)
- Flash Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsW3oYwD2oM)
- Wily Stage 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cjlNBepzd0)

3. Super Metroid:
- Upper Brinstar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbcZmaus6g0)
- Lower Maridia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K96venBS7P8)

4. Blaster Master:

- Area 7 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25a-bA5a89c)

In no particular order:

1. Enter the Void (from Kingdom Hearts: BbS) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh7nK3ceoY4

2. Umber Wall (from Mechwarrior 2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM3MwpkVYKQ

3. More Gun (from Team Fortress 2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm1_zBSUYFc

4. Mambo de Chocobo (from Final Fantasy V) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTHc5jmDyQE

5. Main Theme (Guild Wars: Factions) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMvcglKzCgE

I limited myself to one entry per game series. If I hadn't, this list would have been dominated by Kingdom Hearts music. Also, some hard choices were made when I limited myself to just 5.

Also, the temptation was strong to include some "covers" and "remixes" that I thought were brilliant, but I decided to stick with the genuine articles.

KH3D: L'Eminenza Oscura I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgEGYgYfDls)
Okami: Rising Sun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZxK58tPU4I)
Hocus Pocus: Title Screen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWqConCdfAE)
Ecco the Dolphin: Jurassic Beach (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcfAwgPhMko)
Diddy Kong Racing: Greenwood Village/Windmill Plains (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkOBOBaPJ9M)

Picking only five is really bloody hard. I could make massive walls of links from the KH saga alone, seriously.

EDIT: Tycho stole my #1 so I put something else in. ]:<

I love Poison of a Snake. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVhRD--xyeY) @w@
It's so good.

It's also super easy to turn into a kickass metal song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtEA2QOY1T4).

Thought I'd share this one. Ironsword for the NES had a lot of great songs, but I feel this one is the best.
It has that Braveheart feel to it.

1. Journey - The Road of Trials (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdG-e_Joc8Q)

Honestly, I love the entirety of Journey's soundtrack. If I could live in a music album, I'd live in the soundtrack for Journey. The music is simply amazing.

2. Dark Souls - Nameless Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvvFnR0kJFw)

You'd have to play Dark Souls to understand the tragedy and depth to this song. If you can, just imagine mothers losing their sons to a curse that plagues the land that revives their bodies into mindless, souless hollowed shells of themselves, cursed to suffer till the end of time and you begin to get a glimpse of the tip of the iceberg.

3. Mass Effect 3 - Leaving Earth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGHA9oO1Ybg)

Disregarding the end of this game, the Mass Effect series was one of the few game series I could pretty confidently say I was completely in love with. I grew attached to every character in the game and got way too invested into a story that I would be laughing at from any other position. I don't know why I loved the characters so much, but I did, and this song at the beginning of the last game still gives me chills when I hear it.

4. Halo - Main Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5yVOFokLVY)

Speaking of chills, the first Halo was one of my first forays into shooters and I had a blast with the game. Between this and Mass Effect, I think I'm beginning to understand I have a thing for space games. :v

5. Yoshi's Island - Donut Lifts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8X5ih39PN84)

And I threw this one in here because it's now stuck in your head for eternity. :v

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwbMkIROOGU One of the best remixes/remasters/whatever you want to call it of one of the best level themes of one of the best games on the NES. It's pretty much as epic as epic gets.

I always liked these two from the game, as well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEnqC8eI4fU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9m0V3cbaX0

Been so long since I played the game that I don't remember what levels they're in for shit.
But I like the songs.
The second one has a bit of a Solar Jetman feel to it.

Speaking of Solar Jetman, instant nostalgiagasm, right here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjnD2BsspF4

This, too:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF0en9b2y6M
I would let that song repeat on my TV screen for hours while I was drawing, sometimes.

Also, Nerevar Rising is superior to the other rehashes of the same basic tune (the Oblivion theme is alright, and Sons of Skyrim is nice and has a great "Norse epic" sound to it, but NR is better).

It's not bad, but the original is far superior, IMO.
The Moon Theme also reminds me of Megaman music by a fuckton.

You're extra-biased towards 8-bit chiptune stuff though, that much I know

I'll admit, for me the choice between the original material and the orchestral remasters can be REALLY hard at times, to the point where I simply feel that one can appreciate both in their own right without choosing a "favorite", but that's just me

They are good songs on their own, and I'm not trying to come off like "no u r teh wrong" if I am.
I'm just saying that I like the original more.
Though, yes, I do very much have an oldschool bias. Lol.

Though there are things I very much prefer the remix of. Like a lot of the Lifeforce music I feel sounds a million times better the way people remix it.
Except Stage 3, because they always fuck that shit up.

Another thing about a lot of remixes/remasters/covers is that I find myself saying (in the case of certain orchestral-ensemble remasters, at least) is stuff like "oh, that part would have sounded better with strings" or "that would have been better with brass" or similar nitpicks (I have yet to find an orchestral version of Decisive Battle that really satisfies me, though they're usually pretty good regardless). I mean, I am by no means an authority on music but I still find myself nitpicking.

I thought that this would me a mandatory share. If you haven't heard of Smooth Mcgroove, he's a user on YouTube who makes acapella versions of classic video game music. His talent is off the charts.

Don't feel bad, ALL of mine were. Technically speaking. After Burner II wasn't so much a sequel as it was the finished version of After Burner. So much so that the original was quickly replaced and never really made it outside Japan to my knowledge.

Oh no, I don't feel bad at all. It was just a silly observation. I have nothing against these sequels. (Sure Zelda II is looked down on or even forgotten but it has a place in my heart). Especially with games like Borderlands 2 and Portal 2 which were both sequels to games that their developers didn't expect to take off like they did. They're both wonderful games that really fleshed out into a complete vision.
