I watch this channel more than any other. That title was held by ESPN, but then I realized fuck football.

Anyways, do you watch this? Do you have a favorite show? Do you have a favorite chef? Fuck Guy Fieri?

Celebrity Cook-off is starting right now. It's actually fairly celebritized this time. To note:

Penn Jillette
Florence Henderson
Chris Kattan
Judy Gold
Herschel Walker
Tiffany (?) (I appreciate that she exists so she definitely fulfills that basic quality of being a human and you need to be one to be a celebrity)
Jake Pavelka (?)
Vanilla Ice

If I'm gonna turn AGDQ off for anything, this deserves it.

Unfortunately, after losing a lot of weight over the past couple of years I'm forced to treat the Food Network akin to a loaded gun.

Food Network, like so many other specialized networks (Discovery, History, etc.), has really gone down the shitter. Mario Batali could out-cook their entire lineup right now, combined.

We get the channel over here, but I think it has a different programming.
Either way: I love watching "Chopped" and the crazier the ingredients, the better.

Food Network, like so many other specialized networks (Discovery, History, etc.), has really gone down the shitter. Mario Batali could out-cook their entire lineup right now, combined.

I appreciate the idea that specialization tends to hit a peak, and reinvention can lose sight of that peak, and that the reinvention can lose the people who made that peak appreciable in the first place.

But

I think you doubt Michael Symon as a legit chef a bit. And Alton Brown was an interesting dude to make the science of cooking tangible before he became the Monty-Python-regurgitating, disposable host he is now. And Anne Burrell, Mario Batali's chosen Iron Chef buddy, is still really good all the time.

Considering the expectation and subsequent departure for the content of History, or Discovery Channel, or TLC, Food Network has really not moved that far off their original mark. It's still food. Food may be presented strangely, but still. Food.

Edit: I do admit there are some despicable programs like Mystery Diners and anything involving Robert Irvine (the budget Gordon Ramsay).

Any Heston Blumenthal on the Food Network? I love his themed specials where he makes experimental foodstuffs. His 70s and 80s themed specials were particularly enjoyable.

Unfortunately, not that I'm aware of. He might have shown up on Iron Chef America like Jamie Oliver did, but I can't remember off the top of my head.

Shame, he really makes food fun. In the original and entertaining way I mean, not by shouting and being 'dynamic' while making bacon.

I have serious respect for Alton Brown, and Symon, Flay and Burrell are all competent (especially Burrell, Batali chose wisely). But they're not anything special or inspired. Give Flay a challenge and I can generally pick out the ingredients he's going to use before he starts (blue corn and poblano peppers erryday). Batali was a god amongst such men, and they made a conscious decision to move away from that sort of real talent over to personality-driven mediocrity. It started as far back as Emeril's silly notch-kicking, spice-bamming antics, but even Emeril could easily out-cook their current lineup. Both Batali and Emeril got canned in favor of Rachael Ray, who had no professional skill whatsoever. Ray, in turn, was supplanted by Guy Ferry ("Fieri" being an invention of the same committee that put together his Ed Hardy douchebag style and also added Poochie (http://static3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130725095428/simpsons/images/9/9c/Poochie.png) to the Itchy & Scratchy show) to continue running the network (and his colon) into the ground. And in the middle of it all, somehow Aunt Drunky Sandra Lee is still getting air time, even after her Kwanzaa cake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrQbWeNQpiA) debacle.

PBS's cooking shows are really good, though, because they're actually driven by the food rather than personalities. I could watch Martin Yan forever, I'd take Lidia's Italian over Giada's any day, and Julia and Jacques is simply a classic.

Honestly, I've less a problem with Rachel Ray and Giada than I do with things like "Great Food Truck Race" or "Cutthroat Kitchen." I mean, I'd rather watch the latter two, but that seems a bit more like jumping on the competitive reality TV bandwagon as much as possible in primetime. The focus is more on interpersonal drama than the actual content they're cooking. Then again, sometimes Vanilla Ice shows up and it's okay.

In the case of a lot of their daytime cooking shows with Ina Garten or whatever, I realize I'm not their target demographic. I think they're not trying to impress as much as they're trying to relate to stay-at-home parents. The stuff on 30 Minute Meals might actually be useful to some cooks and families in place of a run to McDonalds or something.

I dunno. Food Network seems to fly all over the place with chefs I respect, and then food porn, and then cooks I laugh at, and actual interesting ideas to try and ruin myself. It centers on food, and I like food. Apparently I can put up with food's sideshow no matter what it is.

Guy Fieri is just in a world of his own, though. Sandra Lee also has her own world, but she blacked out and can't remember how she got there or how to get back out.

Ina Garten's target demographic is rich Orange County housewives that have nothing to do aside from blow tons of money on premium ingredients, turn them into pretty ordinary food that doesn't showcase their quality, and invite the girlfriends over for lunch with $100 bottles of wine every day.


...Yeah, I'm bitter.

I hate to be the one to break it, but Chris Kattan was the first celebrity kicked off Celebrity Cook-off. On one hand, he got to be called a celebrity again. On the other hand, he never got a chance to cook mango. Heh. No

Only food shows I watch are anything with Gordon Ramsay. That man is inspiring.

The only other food related show I ever really watch is Bizarre Foods. But that comes on the Travel Channel if I'm not mistaken.
